This will be a short review of the Xenon Depot Xtreme HID 5000k Kit.

PRICE: XD offers a $25 discount to T4R members. Not too shabby. The kit was less than $150 delivered to my doorstep. I didn't go with the Phillips bulbs b/c I didn't feel like the extra $45ish would make a big enough difference to justify the relative increase in price. Could be wrong, but I'm happy with the results regardless. I would consider it a good value.

CUSTOMER SERVICE: I wouldn't have much to put here, except that my autocomplete accidentally entered my old address for shipment when I checked out. I immediately emailed customer service to request the change to my new address and they complied. Package arrived on time and as promised.

INSTALLATION: Although the kit is nearly PnP, the wiring is not very straightforward. The supplied diagram does show how to plug everything up, but I feel it could be improved upon to be a little more clear. There is a fairly detailed troubleshooting section, although thankfully I didn't need it. Triple checked all connections and everything fired up on the first try. During the checking phase I did come across a couple of connections which were swapped, which you must take extra care to catch. There are a few identical plugs, so care must be taken to ensure the correct connection for each. The part which really disappointed me was that they were only supplied with one pair of 3M sticky pad for mounting each ballast. There is a relay and another small box thing which also need to be secured. It would be nice if there was some 3M pad included to mount these as well. All together though, it was a fairly simple install. If you can swap a car stereo, you can do this.

*Update* the connector which plugs into the stock harness doesn't fit quite tight enough and mine came loose while driving. This caused the relay to"chatter" and rapidly turn the light on and off.this is bad for hids.I ended up fixing it by clamping it closed with a zip tie. A little bit jerry rigged, but it works.

RESULTS: Drastically increased light output. The bulbs seem to be pretty compatible with the stock halogen projectors. The cutoff is sharp and I haven't been highbeam flashed yet. For all of the concern people seem to have with swapping HIDs into Halogen projectors, I have to say it wasn't an issue in this case. Definitely not worth (to me) the extra expense and complication of a full HID projector retrofit. Those with regular reflector style may want to consider at least grabbing the projectors from an 06+.

The 5000k color is exactly what I wanted...ice white without being too blue. Looks very slick. You can see some of the difference in output in the photos below, although the empty lot next to my house (where the pics were taken) is somewhat lit up already. In areas with no ambient lighting, the difference is even more severe.

I need to correct the aim on the drivers side headlight. The 4runner was in a minor front end collission in its previous life and when they replaced the headlight they never bothered correcting the aim. When I do this, I'll post up pics of the beam pattern.

Also during the swap, I pulled the housings, painted the insides black, wet sanded and polished them, and installed XPel clear bra to keep em looking good. And without further ado, on to the headlight porn:

here's the beams on a wooden fence from about 15-20 ft. You can clearly see one of the "steps". The other is just as pronounced but I was having trouble catching it bc of the brightness washing the photo out. cutoff looks clean to me. Again I will reiterate that it would take a lot to convince me that a "proper" hid projector retro fit would be worth the time or expense in this application.

For all those that do not understand why one should not put rebased HID bulbs in a halogen projector...let me just leave this here...this is a proper HID projecotr/bulb cutoff:

Notice the cutoff "steps" that can clearly be seen and thw light is much more evenly distributed. OEM D2S bulbs in a HID projector will offer much better results that just throwing a rebased HID bulb into a halogen reflector. One thing that also should be considered that is not shown in either of these pics is beam width. HID projectors have a much better width than halogen projectors.

Here is a quick and easy proper HID retrofit...simply 4 screws, don't know how much less complicated you could get!!

From the thread you linked:

"As you can see the connector is very difficult to connect to the bulb due to the projector being recessed in the opening. The angle also prevents the OEM rubber grommet and the included rubber grommet from attaching and sealing. Not sure how much less complicated you can get!

After further thought, this could be solved by cutting a channel into the opening and sealing with silicone then reinstalling the grommet, but I was afraid of leaks so after speaking with Andrew at TRS I found out I could get some AMP ballasts (instead of the D2S ones) and use a AMP to D2S straight adapter for the bulbs.

After they sent the new ballasts and connectors I cut the grommet off of the D2S ballasts (big no-no) and made the opening large enough to fit over the D2S straight connected and it seals perfectly inside the OEM grommet."

Plus you only have to pay an extra $120 for this headache, and just look at the marginally better cutoff!

C'monm Yosh, level with us. You sell HID projectors.

I'm not going to sit here and refute that true HID projectors offer a crisper cutoff, but the difference is marginal at best, at least in this case. My previous vehicle (2013 F150) had HIDs from the factory, so I have a real world basis for camprison, and it's honestly not that much different.

your quotes pertain to the aftermarket morimoto igniter, an OEM matshushita or denso ballast ran internally could most likely have fixed that issue.

i dont sell projectors...you can search my hidplanet history and see that i am just an enthusiast that does things correctly when it comes to HIDs!

with my '05 tacoma alone, i had d2S bulbs with aluminum shields in H4 housings (terrible idea i know, it was my first setup and i was just learning about HID output), TL and FX projectors retrofitted into the bowl and plain old higher wattage H4 bulbs. I retorfitted many other FX-R projectors for members over on TW before others started doing that as a business.

I have successfully retrofitted OEM HIDs into my wifes OEM halogen projector mazda 3. it was with this vehicle that the difference between the optics of a halogen and HID projector were clearly visible. the bowl shape, as well as the cutoff shield spacing, on each was completely different.

I guess my biggest beef when guys just throw a set of HIDs into a bowl that is not made for them and say there is basically no difference. i am here to debunk this myth for members that do no know any better! optically halogen and HID are different, no way around this. and its not just the cutoff, its the width, intensity, etc.

and BTW, for just a casual member with no affiliation with xenon depot...quite the review...or do YOU sell HID bulbs...?!!

I can appreciate the labored understanding of the minutia of technical issues. Believe me. Clearly you have put a lot of time and effort into researching headlights, and in fact I'm getting a sense this is a hobby in itself for you. You should understand that this isn't the case for everyone.

Sharing information is fine, but when you come in and make smart ass remarks about doing things "the right way", you come off as a bit of a pompous internet police jackass. I'm sure true HID projectors are optimal. But for the headlight layman that I am (and most people are), I am perfectly happy with these results. I never claimed it was "just as good". All I said was that it was good enough for me.

Whether or not you want to admit it, the stock 4runner projectors work pretty well with PnP kits (this one at least). I'm sure this is not the case with all vehicles, but here, it works well enough. Is it just as good as a full retrofit? I'm certain it's not. Is it orders of magnitude better than halogens? Yes! Is the beam pattern dispersed and blinding oncoming traffic? No!

I didn't see any reviews on PnP HID kits with 06+ projectors, so I figured I'd make one. Users can judge for themselves if this sort of kit meets their needs, or if they'd prefer to go full regalia HID projector retrofit. The only reason I specifically mentioned XD in my review is because they are on the forum and offer a discount for members. I felt the review was unbiased and showed what I was happy with as well as some criticisms (install instructions, too few 3M pads).

Lets also point out yosh that he is using some aftermarket headlights and not Toyota OEM ones.

I can walk outside and snap a pic of my 08 with oem projectors with hids in them, the steps, cut offs are clearly visible unlike his. Now while I will admit they are not as colorful as this pic you posted from hidplanet specially they are fx35 color modded on a MKIV supra, not as sharp they don't blind anyone throw a ton of even light. After all there are sometimes exceptions to the rules.

so you pull apart the housing and painted them, but didnt even try to look for the trs quick retro kit while the light was apart? hids in halogen makes a big difference from stock, but when you try to use the proper hid projector, there will be a big difference in the spread of light and the hotspot. good job on the painting tho. also remember to cover up the squirrel finder, its where the unwanted glare comes from, u actually see it above the cutoff on the stock halogen projectors.
