The fact that the Prius got the only good rating is because Toyota has some of the best projector lenses out there plus it was running LEDs. The two Lexus cars that were "acceptable" are, I believe, still running HID tech (with projectors) and the "marginal" Camry was probably a model with projectors but running halogens. As far as Toyota is concerned the results are spot spot on.

I've driven a 2010ish Camry with halogens and projectors and I was not impressed by the headlights. I definitely feel like my 4Runner's low beams could be better...

About half the cars on the roads have front signals almost completely drowned out when the headlights are on. It's frustrating when you think you're waiting for a car to pass, only to notice the turn signal is actually on when they get right up close.

And Acura's projector lenses are probably not that great. Older Acuras have no "cut-off" so they basically act like flood lamps instead of projecting a more focused beam in front of the vehicle. If you've ever driven towards an older TL you'll know what I am referring to, they're blinding. Whereas Toyota/Lexus projector lenses have a distinct "cut-off" point where, when aimed at vertical surface like a wall, you can see a definitive top edge to the beam.

That's why I mentioned the quality of the lenses, then the specific lighting technology behind them.

I would like to see the standards for headlights address turn signal visibility better than they currently do. It's frustrating when you think you're waiting for a car to pass, only to notice the turn signal is actually on when they get right up close.

I'd like them to address reverse lights that can't seen from the side of the vehicle. Can't even count how many times I've been driving through a parking lot and not seen the reverse lights of a car attempting to back out until I was directly behind them...

I'm glad they are doing this testing. I rented a Nissan Altima once and the headlights seemed terrible. Someone told me that's silly because all headlights have to meet the same standards. I'm glad to see I was right.

They should test fog lights too. Most fog lights are not that helpful for fog, and most drivers leave them on when they shouldn't. I've had my 4runner for a year and a half, and I can think of only two or three times I needed fog lights, usually when it's snowing heavily. In the worst snowstorm there was too much glare from both the low beams and the fog lights reflecting off the falling snow, and I couldn't see the road at all. The option to turn off the low beams with the fogs on would have helped, fog lights with a sharper cutoff would have helped, and heaters to melt off the rime ice from the lights and edges of the windshield would have helped. By the time I exited the highway the front of my car looked like the one with regular wiper blades here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lrcOnGBYas but instead of icy mist huge snowflakes were falling.

I guess the fog lights are also helpful for driving around my neighborhood since the low beams don't illuminate to the side and around corners very well, but the low beams should be better.

Very true. For me, the bigger issue i see around is lifted trucks or aftermarket headlights that are not properly adjusted...blinding everyone! But i am sure that the driver must think that he/she is cool. Dumbass!

I have MDX which has same LEDs as TLX. There is a cut-off for sure. I also had Prius V with LEDs. I actually think my MDX LEDs are better than my Prius V...but maybe because my MDX is higher off the ground? Or that i am blind.

Thats why i said the older Acura's though, pre-LED. The old TLs with HIDs were obnoxious. I'm sure they've gotten better since then, and from what you're saying, they obviously have.

The height difference between the two cars could be a huge factor. Most nights I feel like my 4Runners are not bright enough and the height of the lights may be a factor.
 
I am also surprised that the TLX didn't do better. I think the headlights on my buddies TLX are pretty amazing. Guess I'll have to drive a prius at night to compare. Out of all the vehicles I've driven, my 2012 F150 (halogen) had probably the worst lights. The low beams were worthless but the highbeams were OK but not great. Of course all the older vehicles I've owned (59 chevy, 59 willys, 69 F100, and more) really had crappy lights.

I have FX-R 3.0 retrofits on my lifted 3rd gen and find that in comparison to my father's SL65 I can see MUCH better. I am convinced that this is simply due to the higher seating position. The throw of his lights is a bit better (mine are aimed quite low to avoid blinding other drivers) but I just don't feel like I can see as far. He has other much more expensive cars, but the SL seems to have the best lights. I really like how they move around corners, and over bumps. Wish my retrofit did that!

This effect is multiplied in crappy weather. In HEAVY PNW rain or snow I'll take my 4Runner over anything.

Toyota has most of their headlights designed and built by Koito. Koito generally makes good products, but its, as with everything, a get what you pay for situation.

And the type of livht source doesnt have much to do with the end result. You can have an excellent headlight that was designed to wring maximum efficiency from a low wattage, long life bulb. You can have a shitty headlight that uses a 25 or 35 watt HID burner. You can have a good headlight from LEDs with either a projector lens or a reflector or other optic.

We are hamstrung by the regulations. FMVSS 108 is the federal regs for vehi le lighting. It is basically a list of minimal and maximal intensities at different points within the beam, at various angles, with the headlight at its intended height.

These intensity variables give a lot of wiggle room for both good and bad design.

Theres also limitations on material selection. Headlight manufacturers used to make a lot more headlights with glass lenses. Well, the molds or stanps for these lenses are expensive. They dont want to replace them, so even new headlights might be shitty and out of spec. Manufacturers started using plastic. Well, because of the length of lifecycle testing, new materials take. Lot longer to be adopted here in the US, than say the EU. We have to lay samples out in the desert of arizona and souther florida for several years. They stick them under a uv/ir lamp and heat and cool them to simulate the passage of time more efficiently and consistently. So they can use newer/better materials and UV/IR resistant coatings in the EU.

Plastic headlights here are generally polycarbonate with a UV resistant coating baked into their external coating. Its a cheap, relatively durable material. The coating wears off and gets baked away after about 5 years. Headlights begin to degrade/fog up/get sandblasted and yellowed in appearance. This cuts down the amount of light on the road significantly.

Sure, you can sand off the exterior oxidiation, but now youve exposed bare, untreatex polycarbonate to the sun. The process begins again, at an accelerated rate (none of the restorative kits have a uv coating that is anywhere as near as effective as the original).

And while headlivht intensities are mandated, they get tested on a bench, fed by a power supply. So companies can skimp on the wiring, or run the wiring through a janky little switch on the stalk, and you lose a lot of power, and therefore output, which means less light on the road, and a more dangerous driving experience.

As far as other lighting regs go, there is no technical definition or limits for fog lights, so most cars just have a shitty little "accessory" light. No real cut off, no real beam pattern. And even worse, no ability to turn off the low beams and use only the fogs, which most idiots on the road wouldnt know to do anyway.

Hopefully this will spark some improvements, but i doubt it.

There's also the fact that regulations for lighting have not caught up in the US. Laser lights and active headlights are basically non-existent in the US, where as European markets see better headlight technology.

3 inch drop at 25ft is all you need, but the fxr has more foreground lighting so it limits your distance a little.
 
Haha try driving a 3rd gen with stock headlights. I could see more if I closed my eyes and clicked my tongue to see via sonar...

You have the 99+ clear housings too! Try the 96-98 frosted housings if you want to see something worse.

that's not why your headlights are bad, the wiring is going to be sized correctly for the current (which is related to the power where P=VI). also, i don't think any manufacturers are running the headlight supply through the light switch on the stalk, that wouldn't make much sense, all that switch does is switch a relay.
