Headunit question....

Does anyone know of any headunits with a built-in hard disk to store Mp3's? I have been searching high and low and have not been able to find anything.

I was also thinking of a nice headunit(maybe Alpine or Pioneer) that I could get a seperate hard disk storage unit to add to it.

Any thoughts?

You could build yourself a CarPC and use that. Might want to check out crutchfields. They usually have that HD HU package...

Rio made a head unit a couple of years ago that had a built in hard drive. A friend of mine bought one back then and still has it and I wish I could have bought one too. It allowed you to pull it out of your vehicle, and carry it to your computer so you could connect it and transfer the MP3's to it. I found one auction on ebay selling one, but these days they are impossible to find...

I know Sony made one, I think they still make it now. It's pretty expensive, but it has a USB port on the front and a Memory Stick opening as well. The internal HDD stores music which can be ripped from the USB, Memory Stick, or striaght from a CD you put in it. I seem to remember it had a CD-RW drive so if you had music on the unit that you wanted, you could burn the cd to a blank disc.

I'll try to find it.

Here it is:

yeah, I installed a rio empeg into my 4runner a couple months ago. Here's the thread with pics:

I've had the empeg for the past 2 years and it's probably still one of the best players out there (non-portable). It runs on linux and the software is still being updated by the programmers who own one. I bought mine when they were on closeout from Rio so it was only $300 for the 20gb version. Not a bad deal at all.
