Hear a slight ticking sound from the engine..is that normal? 08 urban runner v6

v8 here and i dont hear any of the ticking like falls. It seems to be a 'problem' with the v6 only as seen through this thread.

Basically this thread highlight's this guy's experience with the sound as well as a guy from Toyota coming down to check out his truck.

The tacoma seems to have the same problem and they have the same engine. It's odd that they had a TSB for this problem on the tacoma but none for the 4runner.

conclusion: it probably won't go away but you can decrease the noise by getting new manifolds like the tacoma's TSB.

Some customers may experience a ticking or tapping-type noise from the engine area at 2000-2500 rpm during acceleration that is most noticeable after a cold soak. New exhaust manifolds have been developed to minimize this condition

its normal and the tacoma and fj guys have it too. There is a cheap fix that only uses 2 O-rings. this should also work on the v8 too cuz we have the same sensor.

ticking noise

We recently purchased an 07 4runner with 36000 mi. I heard the noise when we looked at the vehicle on the lot. After I purchased it I requested that the dealer (Chevrolet dealer) take a look at it for safety sake. Their techs could not find anything, but they told me that the variable valve timing engines are louder than others, GM has a similar motor in a Cadillac of some sort. However, for good customer service, they took it to the nearest Toyota dealer for extra measure. The Toyota dealership checked it out and said it was normal. So, though I may not like the sound from all indications I have found it is ok. P.S. I even tried a Toyota oil filter and Mobil 1 oil and same result.

the v8 in my 06 4runner is quiet, the v6 in my 08 highlander is noisey.

Very likely a result of the mechanical lifters Toyota uses, rather than the hydraulic types most other automakers use.

Mine does it too.

Every Toyota V6 ticks for some reason, even those in cars/crossovers and even Lexus products. Theories include lifters, valves, and injectors. It's strange, but very normal.

V6 Noise


I drove a leased '05 4Runner V6 SR5 for three years, and it had that "noise" as well. It was far from annoying, but was certainly noticeable with the hood open or if you were idling and really listened for it.

The local Toyota dealer did say that it was the fuel injectors making the noise, but it was under warrantly the entire life of my lease....so I never gave it a second thought.

I used Mobil-1 synthetic and OEM oil filters, but the noise never got better or worse; which made me realize it was nothing to do with lubrication issues.

My 4Runner was a great truck, but I sure hated having to put so much fuel in its tank. (Oddly, my 2008 Mustang GT gets much better mileage - and it has a V8.)
