Heat Shield for Hood

What is the best place to find that fiber heat shield thing for under the hood.

I was going through some trails last weekend and the water caused it to disintegrate. All the tabs are still there just the material was just pulled through the tabs.

what you are calling a heat sheild is actually a duel device, it does work as a heat sheild but it was also designed as a fire suppression blanket. The plastic tabs are supposed to melt and the blanket will then drop to cover the motor, and I believe that is/was a dealership only item...(I could be wrong on this)

As a far as a replacement you could look in a salvage/junk yard for one.....

It's called a Hood Insulator. About 175 bucks online plus shipping. You may be able to find one in a junkyard, but you will want new clips as they are pretty much impossible to remove without breaking at least a few.

I just bought a new sports hood and was debating on getting a new hood isolator...the stock hood one won't fit. $175 on line, that's what the dealership wants for one. I thought for sure you could find one cheaper on-line...that bites! Knowing its also works as a fire suppressant...I'm more app to replace it now. Heck with my luck, if it caught fire and burned up, the insurance would refuse to pay because I didn't have the hood isolator in place...lol!

If you find one on line, let us know. I'll do the same...

All the 4runners I have driven that have them also had noticeably less engine noise. Until I read this thread I thought that they were made for noise reduction I have also only seen them on Limited models.
Does anyone have one on a non limited?

If you still have the old hood w/insulator, recheck the fitment, because I also did a hood swap and it fit just fine....you may check the the holes for the plastic tabs and you might have to drill an extra hole or two but the insulator should fit the new hood w/scoop

I have a '01 non limited and it came with the hood insulator, as far as I know all 3rd gen T4Rs came with it, possibly the previous owner removed it?

You could just hit up the junkyard and find a slightly bigger one off a different car, cut it to fit and secure it. I know my local junkyard wouldng charge more than 25 for such an item.

I believe they weren't fitted until 99, I wouldn't replace it if I were you, I had a 4Runner without one and i didn't notice a difference in sound. It's up to you though.

Hey, thank for the heads up. Yeah, I didn't try real hard...I guess I more just assumes it wouldn't fit. But for $175, I can drill a couple holes and make it fit.
