Heater controls

2003 4runner confused on heater controls

When should the AC button light come on?
AC light was just about always on unless HVAC was OFF.
I of course expected it on for AC and maybe defrost. But I thought just use the AUTO button and then temp up or down for heat or cool like my old lexus. But doing it this way for heat the AC light was always on.
Then I read that the AUTO button is only for AC and not to use it for heat.
So for heat I just use the temp buttons and the fan speed buttons but the AC light is still on 50% of the time.
Thanks

The system adds a/c to the mix to de-fog the windows. You can still use the auto feature without the a/c on by manually pressing the a/c button and turn off the a/c. It is only needed when the windows are fogging.

Run AC in the winter at least once a week for ten minutes in order to lubricate the compressor and the system.
