heater core bypass

Hey,

I started to smell coolant while the a\c is on. I don't use the heater, so I would rather just bypass it for now than replace it. Can I just bypass the core without having problems in the future?

Yes you can. No issues.

Just make sure when you by-pass the line, it should go through the heater core valve otherwise most of the hot coolant will go through the by pass and not through the radiator.

I hope your problem is not with the heater core. I have a thread about removing the heater core in a 3rd gen and it is 2 day full time work.

This looks like where my leak might be coming from. The upper hose is fairly new, I repositioned the clamp to see if it does anything.

^^^ Buy an OEM radiator hose. Those won't leak.

(I had to bypass the backseat heater core years ago)
With 298K miles on this vehicle I really can't justify the cost and effort to replace it so a heater core bypass was the best option again.
Dayco Molded Heater Hose - Part# B86050 from AutoZone fit perfectly into place and did the trick.

thanks for that part number...while I dont have a leak right now...I thought I would pick up some hose so I could bypass if im out in the back woods overlanding...might add that hose to my recovery kit then it would be molded to make the turn....thanks

The rear heater can be bypass with the the factory hoses. We have pictures in a few threads on how its done I think you can even reuse the clamp and its free..;-)

Your thread is great! I did mine about a year ago and couldnÂ’t have done it without your write up. This job was worse than resealing the oil pan and worse than rear axle seal replacements.
