Hello 4Runner Maniacs

I finally got rid of my premium gas using, 8-cylinder Lincoln LS and bought a 2005 4Runner.

I've been surfing this site for a couple of weeks while researching which SUV to buy and I've found it to be very informative...kudos.

Just one question that I couldn't track down while surfing this site...those of you who bought a used 4R from a dealership...did you buy an extended warranty? I chose not to, from what I've read on here and researched on the web...it'll never, ever, ever breakdown *crosses fingers*. My 4R has 33,000 miles on it and it would have been $1800 to go with 4 yr or 100K warranty...or pre-paid service plan as I call them.

Don't do it! Waste of money. First they'll offer it to you for around 3k in price. Then you say no. Then the guy will magically 'notice' that you somehow qualify for a discount further knocking the price down to around 2k. Then you say no. Then the guy will further knock the price down upon noticing that 'hey for you i'll go ahead and say this is a business vehicle' and offer you for around 1k. DONT.

This is how they get so much more money out of you.

They'll also try to sell you about 5 add-on items.

At first, I was almost suckered in (I got suckered in on my Lincoln LS...but that deal actually worked out since the damn thing always had something go wrong with it that was uber spendy) but luckily my 3 year old started getting antsy and I was like "Sorry man, gotta bolt before a meltdown hits".

I think I was more turned off by the fact that the guy was super pushy and implied I was re****ed for not buying the warranty.

no offense to the good ones out there, but he is a car salesman
I hear they have some pretty high pressure jobs though.

I bought my 4 runner used with 15k miles on it. And of course the sales guy tried to sell me the extended warranty. I said no right at the start ( I forgot what the starting price was). I told him, this is a toyota and i dont have to worry about nothing breaking down. So he finnaly went down to $1000.00 which gave me 4 years and up to 100k miles. I did think i might need it since 2003 was the first year for the redisgn 4 gen and i didnt want to take any chances.

I did read on this web site some one paid like $800.00 for their warranty. If you want to buy it, hold out and they will go lower. I am pretty sure they will call you back.

Extended warranty is a Joke ....Next time some salesman asks you if you want a warranty...Remind him when he was pushing the sale of the car how he mentioned the Legendary Toyota quality ..and with such quality why would you need an extended warranty ?? Plus it is just the finance guys commision anyway !!!
and most used Toyotas from the Dealer are "certified " which come with a 7year 100,00 mile warranty from the original date of purchase !! So Think about it before you do ...I have owned Nothing but Toyotas since 1978 and Have never had one break down, from pickups to camrys to 4 runners Toyota s Are Awesome.

The 7 year 100, 000 mile warranty only covers the power train. If any thing else goes out, then your S.O.L. Sure, noting will go wrong with a used toyota, but if if does. It nice to have the bumper to bumper warranty.

Services provided include:

Towing up to $100 for mechanical breakdown or collision recovery to the nearest Toyota dealership/repair facility
Flat tire changes
Jump starts
Lockout service
Gas deliveries (does not include payment for the gas)

I remember a thread about getting a warranty from a certain dealer at a lower price. You may wan to check on that.

Let me say, that there is something to be said about getting a warranty. Cars can be mighty expensive to fix, even a small problem can add up to big bucks. It is not super crazy to think about getting a warranty.

Having said that, I didn't get one, but I will look into to it for my next car (and I will problably reject it again.)

the PLATINUM warranty is well worth it. It's an extension of the bumper to bumper. I purchased mine for 795, 6 years 100K miles. I did it because I had the Limited with all the toys including air suspension. Not sure if this warranty is available to you since you purchased it used. This warranty also helped me SELL off my lease. Nobody wants a car payment with no warranty.

IMO the Platinum extended warranty is worth the price IF you get a good deal on it. There is a thread on buying the extended warranty from Shaun McKinsey (sp?) and a lot of folks have reported positive feedback. I'll try to find the thread for you and post it.

If my Runner had the 100k warranty all it would've covered was my rear axle seals since I'm at 138k and that's the only thing that's had an issue outside normal maintenance.
