I am new to this site, and I am picking my 2000 Toyota 4runner limited tonight. I'd like to make minor performance upgrades. Does anyone have any tips, thoughts, suggestions, etc. for me? Thanks in advance!

Depends on where you want to end up. Is it going to be taken off road?

If not then stick to more visual mods. How much do you want to spend?
 
What do you plan on doing with your rig? Off-roading, daily driver, both? That should dictate what you need to do first.
 
I want to be able to do some light off-roading(have no clue where to begin), maybe put in a subwoofer (very little clue where to begin, i have the sub and amp from my old car.) Money spent will be moderate (Im not afraid to drop some cash here and there but am ultimately conservative). Sorta need some direction, I'd to do something with it instead of leave it stock, thats why i asked.

Edit: Will be both off road and daily driver.
 
For some light off-roading and still be a nice daily driver - I would do a mild suspension lift (2.5") and then invest in some larger aggressive AT or MT tires mounted on some suitable off-road wheels.
 
What does MT and AT mean? All-terrain and Mixed terrain? I was thinking about a lift. How hard is a lift kit to install? Any suggestions as to brand/model? Hoes does that effect the suspension?

Sorry this stuff needs to be spelled out for me, like i said i have no clue.

AT = all terrain
MT = med terrain

You really need to search here and YT for what mods people are doing, enough info out there to make your eyes bleed.

Lots of different lift options, I prefer new springs and shocks (front coil overs)compared to spacers - but I am sure others will chime in. Install can be done in 4 - 6 hours if you know what you are doing, longer if you don't. Most will tell you you get better handeling with a new suspension and I would be one of them. I would remove the running boards also, it's free and looks better than with them on IMHO.

Where you at in Illinois? I wheel down at Cliffs and over at Badlands in Indiana several times a year.
 
Welcome aboard! I agree with the above post, it all depends what your needs are. If you have not been offroad, try going out once and see if this is something you may want to do before you invest money on a lift. Either way tons of info with pics for you to search and eventually make your mind in what direction you want to take.
 
I am right outside of Joliet, IL. about 45 minutes of Chicago.

So the lift kit is just spacers?
Can a suspension upgrade lift your ride?
is a suspension upgrade necessary if you get spacers/lift kit?

I am really good with searching first, and have been pretty much all day. It is the simple stuff I need to understand before understanding all the info out there. I dont think there is a Spell it out/Absolute beginner/Stupid Newb section out there for folks like me. haha
 
Lol no there isn't, but I am also a newbie. I can count the times the I have gone offroading in one hand. I knew when I was getting my runner that I was getting a lift of some sort. In fact I got my lift and bumper before I even went offroading. Advice I can give you is take your time and ask questions we are here to help.
 
FYI - MT stands for mud terrain. The AT's (all-terrain) will give you a quieter and smoother ride on the roads and still give you an aggressive look. The MT's (mud-terrains) will give you a noisier and less smooth ride on the roads, but more beneficial on the trails and a more aggressive look.
