Hello everyone, brand new newb here and i just picked up a 91 in good condition. It need some work and i am ready to get dirty to get her ready for the winter. But, to the critical problem i am currently having:

1. I have head lights but no, dash or driving lights. none of the interior (a/c, heat. ect...) also DOES NOT work. Interior dome light work and brake light work.

I've checked the fuses @ the engine bay and driver kick panel and they are good. (test light). The funny thing that it was working yesterday and i installed a new battery 2 days ago. Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Listening to that troll will only give you a headache.

If all your dash lights are out, all the other lights work and your sure the fuses are good. It is more than likely your dimmer rheostat (dimmer knob). It cuts the ground out adding resistance effectively dimming your dash lights. I believe it has a 2 wire connector on it. Once out you can jump the connector with a wire. If your lights come on you need to replace that switch.

When you say your heat doesn't work, do you mean just the lights or did the whole system stop?

Welcome mate! This is a good forum, with many good people, many of whom have good advice and experience. Enjoy your 4runner!
 
Not to insult your intelligence but when you used your test light did you test both sides of the fuse? If you just test the hot side then you'll always get the light even on a bad fuse. when I check my fuses I use a multimeter and do a continuity test between both poles.

Do as GonOvr suggested with the rheostat. It sounds like you're having a grounding issue.

There are many people on this forum who do know what they are doing and want to help. Yes, some have more experience than others, but we are all learning, aren't we? If we all knew what we were doing, we probably wouldn't be on this forum.

I unfortunately can't help you very much, I would probably say to download the FSM, get a good tester, and start tracing.

I'm not scared to admit that when I got my first runner I was not aware that there actually was a rheostat on the dash to control the instrument brightness, and upon my dash going dark I spent a lot of time fretting over fuses until my wife pointed the knob out to me. :ybrick:

I do know that the fuse for the gauge lights on my '90 also had the tail lights and cigar lighter on it - when I tried running my GPS and my iPod charger at the same time it would blow the fuse, I just generally wouldn't know until it got dark and I couldn't read the dash.

THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN SOLVED!!!!!!

Thank you everyone for your replies and assistants. Driver side fuse panel has a loose/short on the connector to the 15A (tail) fuse. I soldered it back and now everything works the way it's supposed to. It was so loose when i put my test light on the fuse it made a good connection (hence a light on the tester), but when i took it off, it looses it's connection. Now all is well.........

Now i am moving on to the suspensions and the rest of the maintenance stuff..


Questions:

1. What diff oil to use? (synthetic or standard)
2. Autotragic fluid? Dex II/III? (same as above)
3. Transfer case fluid?
4. Coming from BMW scene, i've always use synthetic motor oil in my BMW, what is your honest opinion on the oil?

Eventually i want to add a 2" lift kit by OME in a few months, but for now as a DD i want something that is cost effective and give me stock ride? Again i truly appreciate EVERYONE comments, i don't believe in E-Thuging.....

Semantics.

"most everyone..." implies a majority of users, "a lot of dudes..." implies
more than some but less than all. hmmm, which is it?
