Hello to eveyone, noob questions...

Hello everyone i'am new and this is my first post..... I'm a step away from buying a 2003 4runner sr5 V6 with 158k for 7 k, but the ac doesn't work, the pulley on the compressor doesn't work not sure what it is, any idea on how much the compressor cost? What are the pros and cons to these cars? One more thing i notice was the windshield was replaced and you can't see the vin #... my dad's Sienna also had the windshield replaced and the vin can't be seen either, is this normal after a windshield replacement? Any of you with windshield replacements? All info is appreciated, thanks. One more thing.. do these trucks have timing belts or timing chains? do either need to be changed?

I once paid $2,200 for A/C repair. Get an estimate before you buy it. Average repair cost for a major component is probably around $1K.

Pulley does not work probably means the magnetic clutch is not pulling in - may be just a few pennies for a fuse/relay, or hundreds if it is a mechanical problem.

Could be as simple as a leak. If there is no pressure in the AC system the compressor will not cycle.

If I were you spend the money to have the car thoroughly checked out. Go to a mechanic you can trust. It might cost you a 100 bucks or so but worth it when you take into consideration potential repair cost

The V8 has a timing belt, the V6 has the chain. I don't know about the V6, but Toyota recommends replacing the V8's timing belt every 90,000 miles.

I am also new and im buying a 2003 limited v8 with every available option for that year with 71k miles. The dealer is replacing the headlights(condensation in them) a rip in the leather, and doing the timing belt and water pump($1100 job for free). Im paying 13k. I think you should keep looking. Spend a little more and get one without the problems, will probably save you big in the long run. Who knows what else is wrong with that truck... Thats just my opinion, I wouldnt touch that.

Congrats on the 4runner purchase, your gonna love it great beach/fishing vehicle for Long Island, just remeber to get the proper permits and always airdown to 16psi

Thanks, im gonna try to do more surf casting this year. My best friend was a East Hampton village cop(he just transferred to the county) so he gets me a permit that allows me on all the beaches out east. Can't wait to take . 4runner on the beach, 16psi with the stock dunlops is the way to go?

yep generally half your street pressure is where you want to be, so i run 32psi on the street 16 on the sand, you could go as low as 10 but run the risk of breaking a bead, i never find the need to go below 16 the 4runner is a very capable beach vehicle

I rarely have to lock to full 4wd, I have an 05v8 with full time 4wd and that is usually how i run on the beach, go slow make,wide turns, stay above the high water mark & you should be fine. I am in West Babylon and drive mostly RM, Demo, and the Sore Thumb... hampton permits are too much $$ for non residents.

The compressor on the new Toyotas is crazy high for most. It's not aclutch system like the old AC comressors. The system is always turning and has a valve that controls whether it's compressing or not. I know the one for the 2GR is about $1200 because of this. This is also why shouldn't let the AC system EVER get low on fluid either in a newer Toyota. I'm not sure the trucks have this system yet as I've seen AC compressors for these go for $300... not sure if that was V6 or V8 though.

They should fix this free for that price or you should find another truck.
