Help! 2008 Rear Suspension 'chain clink' noise

Like the title says, when I go over bumps/potholes in my 08 SR5, I hear a short abrupt sound that sounds like a chain clinking.

You ever follow a schoolbus that has permanent snow chains that dangle down so the bus clinks and clanks when it goes over bumps? Well basically that's what my 4Runner sounds like. I did observe it only seems to come from the rear, but it definitely came out of nowhere.

I have Bilstein shocks on the rears and a 1" lift kit overall, but neither of these things have caused the noise, as they have been installed and driven on for awhile before the problem began.

Any advice? Solution? Anyone have this issue?

As another member posted a few days earlier regarding a similar problem; check to make sure your jack stand/jack tools are secure in your rear compartment. And while your at it check your spare tire. Assuming you've checked your sway bar and end links. Buts that's usually a clunk rather than a chain "jingle".

Couldn't find anything loose underneath. Do I actually need to remove the spare tire? Anyone have photos of where the actual chain would be, if that's what is causing the problem?

have you checked the trackbar, mine came loose after i swapped my toytec for metaltech in the rear and it had a jingle like sound to it

I also have this problem and it FREAKS me out. I have never heard anything like it before. It is like a "Tink Tink" sound. I have a 2 inch lift. I have removed my spare tire. Also, the sound is deadened when the windows are open so I know it is coming from the underside of the car. I will check the trackbar this weekend.

I had the same sound a few weeks ago. It ended up being a broken ebrake shoe holddown spring bouncing around in the rear rotor.

I've heard the same on a 4runner I just bought, I haven't pinpointed the location of the sound and it's very subtle. I'll have to check the tool compartment and the spare tire mount to see if that could be the source of the "clinking" sound.

Sounds have a tendency to travel and be deceiving to pinpoint. Mine was loose / stripped out skip plate bolts.
