HELP 3.4L 4Runner No Power No Check ENgine LIght

Hello, I am new to this forum and new to 4runners. I am sure this problem has come up before. I recently bought this 99 Toyota 4runner with the 3.4L V6 and it has 120k miles. The vehicle has no check engine light on and pulls up no codes. It doesn't sputter upon acceleration. It doesn't seem to misfire, but when hot it does idle a little rough. But on acceleration it has absolutely no power. You can put barely give the gas or full throttle and its the same. It doesn't sputter or misfire but just doesn't go anywhere. My first thought was the cat. converter or muffler being clogged so i unbolted the whole exhaust at the donut and it ran the same. My next thought is maybe the timing. Is it possible for the timing to advance and is there an adjustment? Any thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Wow that's odd there is no code. 120k is nothing on these motors.... I'd probably start with a TuneUp... new sparkplugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, clean your MAF, IACV, TB and PVC valve ffor starters
 
I started to do that but I just don't see how that would cause this problem. I took out a few plugs and they look good. Really don't want to spend the money on all that if its not necessary.
 
Well I just pulled the top timing belt cover. The alignment marks on the belt are about 3 or 4 notchs away from the TDC mark on the pulleys. That is doesn't seem right. Don't know if somehow it jumped timing or if someone changed the timing belt and did it improperly. Any thoughts?
 
hey man, its probably an injector issue, mine kinda had the same symptoms but it threw a code, however it went for a long time without throwinng a code, id take a look at the plugs and wires go through them, if they were recently replaced then id say go ahead and look at the injectors, its a time consuming job but not too difficult. my bad injector was visibly bad, so i ended up buying an ebay set of refurbished injectors and new gaskets for the intake, and the injectors i got were junk so i had to take the engine apart like three times putting in different sets of injectors so im a pro now lol. but anyways id start there, i could be wrong but it really sounds like the same symptoms my t4r had

Sounds like possible fuel starvation. Start with the fuel filter and fuel pump. A common symptom of a clogged filter or weak pump is sluggish under load.

If you have the crank pulley lined up with the marks, the cam pulley's should be as well (you start with the crank as the cams rotate 2x for every 1x the crank does). If you can't replicate the timing settings from install, then they must have changed.
 
The timing belt alignment marks are only there for initital install of the timing belt when it is replaced. You might get lucky and have it come back around and line up with the timing marks on the cam sprockets, but it will take a few revolutions of the motor with a ratchet and socket to do that.

I'd put the timing mark on the harmonic balancer on 0* on the timing tab, and have the cam sprocket timing marks lined up with the marks on the back timing cover plate. Then check the timing mark on the crankshaft and make sure it is pointed at the pink dot at the 12 o'clock position.

If all of those are correct, then the timing should be right on. I'd start with a fuel filter because most people overlook that important part as a tune-up item. Restricted fuel flow from a plugged fuel filter will be more noticeable at higher speeds where more fuel demand is needed for the higher engine load.
 
I'm having the same problem and haven't figured it out yet started with it barely starting and now it's starting to bog down
 
Mine is a 02 4Runner 3.4 4wd never had this problem before but when I did buy the car 3 years ago it did have the check engine light on with the vcs light on but checked and nobody said it was a concern
