Help. 3RZ problems...

Hi. We have 'Autodata' here in the UK but this engine was never officially imported into this country so the info is very basic.
I have finally managed to download a Tacoma pinout so hopefully they are the same, E7 pin 12 fingers crossed......

You should be able to back probe that pin with your multimeter, ground the other probe, set to ac volts, and have a friend lightly tap with a metal object in the vicinity of the sensor, or anywhere on the block really. You should see it generate a voltage, I don't have a spec for you, However it will have to be over a certain threshold for the PCM to "hear" it.

I would say if it's under a volt replace it.

Hi Guys.
Been too busy to play with the knock sensor today but cleaned the AFM with carb cleaner and moved the TPS to the opposite side of the index and it works a heck of a lot better. 3 twenty mile commutes and no CEL. She is certainly not fixed but certainly greatly improved, driveable even. Does anyone have an idea how to set the TPS properly or is it a trial and error job ?
Knock sensor next......

Well she has been running great for a week or so without CEL or any real hesitation and I was rather happy with her. Unfortunately on the way to work this morning while on the motorway (freeway) my absent friend the CEL light came on. The difference is marked when it lights and she is awful to drive when illuminated. I have jumped the diagnostic socket terminals and not one but 2 codes have surfaced. Code 15 and code 24.
For the life of me I cannot find what these are. Does anyone have a clue ???

On the older engines those codes were
24 - intake air temperature sensor
15 - throttle control motor sensor

I suspect your emissions system is different than what we have here, so maybe those still apply. You need to track down a service manual for your specific vehicle. I don't think trucks with US emissions equipment are going to be exactly the same.

15 Throttle control sensor ??? Is this the same as the TPS ? I cleaned the air mass meter prior to her running so well (24) surely it doesn't want cleaning again !!!

Thanks Jeremy.
The JDM Toyota Surf runs OBD1 for some silly reason. I think they only went OBD2 when they had to for other markets !!!

Well now she has started idling irratically and stalling off at road junctions. She is somewhat akin to some women I have known, you never know what to expect from her when you take her out..... Has anyone had to replace the AFM on a 3 RZ ? She keeps bringing up 15 and 24. Since removing and cleaning the knock sensor that code has not surfaced again... When she is bad she can stall in reverse or drive and the tachometer needle bounces up and down....

My '99 3RZ-FE 4RUNNER is doing something very similar except mine accelerates mostly like normal then as soon as you reach the speed you want to go and stop accelerating she bogs down sputtering and backfiring until you mash the accelerator to the floor. Setting the cruise control on the expressway is like riding a bucking bronco! I've done the following to try and remedy the problem:
-had the cat pressure tested to see if it was plugged
-new o2 sensors
-replaced leaky cracked manifold with mini-header
-adjusted valve lash (5 were 0.001" tight)
-replaced IAC (fixed unrelated idle issue)
-tested EGR valve, EGR solenoid, and replaced modulator valve
-replaced almost all vacuum lines and checked all lines for leaks.
-removed and thoroughly cleaned throttle body
-replaced fuel filter
-hooked up a gauge to check fuel pressure (check for fuel pump/regulator problem)
-new plugs and wires

Disabling the EGR helps but doesn't remedy the problem.

I think that's just about everything. I gave up and took it to the dealer. So far they've verified everything that's been done so far and are stumped. Today they were going to try another MAF sensor but I doubt that will make a difference. The fact that I haven't heard from them tells me they are still stumped.

It's as if when the ecu senses a low load on the engine it just floods it with fuel. :wtf: Am I stoopid for thinking the dealer would have some diagnostic equipment they could plug in to the car and see where it is going wrong?

Stealerships, huh !!!
It sounds like we have a similar problem but reversed !!!!
My Toy will sit at 90 mph all day long but the throttle responce is diabolical !
I am looking at replacing the throttle body complete with a used one to replace the TPS and IAC at the same time. I guy in Dubai is selling them on ebay but mine is a non VVT model. Will later throttle bodies fit the '97 '98 model year cars ???

Yeah I loathed taking it to the stealership but I figured it would be a waste of time to take it to a local shop that would want to just keep throwing parts at it and hope they get it right. I'm wondering if this is what the dealership is doing. It's been a week and they're still scratching their heads.

I didn't know any of the 3RZ engines had VVT? I know mine doesn't. I wonder if you could use a TB from the US and just block off the EGR? Is your Surf drive by wire? Maybe you could find a used TB from a Tacoma with the 3RZ assuming they sold them on that side of the pond.

Hi Triangle.
I struggle to get any parts for the old girl here this side of the pond. Most of the Toyota 4Runners are JDM Hilux Surfs. They are universally dirty Diesels, so there are very few petrols to part out. We don't get the Taco over here. Tonight on the way home there was a 50 mph limit. She was kangarooing at this constant speed !!!

:mad2: Yep stealership living up to their name. I had to hang up and calm down before I called them back. At least they found the problem or so they claim. Apparently the fuel injectors are bad. They also replaced the MAF and probably a bunch of other stuff that didn't need it. during my troubleshooting I did notice that the fuel pressure did bleed down after a couple minutes and everything else I found said it should hold it's pressure for 20-30 minutes. I just assumed it was the check valve in the fuel pump and the pressure bled off back into the gas tank. So I guess it makes sense that the injectors could be going bad. I wonder if injectors aren't your problem too. I hope not. It will cost me over $1,200:faint: I find out tomorrow if this is indeed my solution.
