Help - 99 SR5 and 16" wheels dilemma

I have seen many, many posts, build threads, etc. where guys have upgraded to 33" tires on a 16" rim. This is what i planned to do as well...wrong! Tried to buy some wheels online, but the guy told me I have "special" TRD brakes (rotors) that will not allow for a 16" rim. The stock wheels are 16", but apparently the backside of the wheel is "coned" to allow for the size of the rotor. Aftermarket 16" wheels do not have this same shape.

So I went to a local truck customization outfit, and they took a look and said the same. They say i need at least a 17" rim.

Does this sound right??

I went through same thing. Took me weeks to find what I liked in a 16 that would fit sense I had new tires. I got the height of the calipers off the rotor where the wheel mounts and called multiple manufactures, including , Dick Cepek, Mickey Thompson, And Proline. They Said They would not fit. I called Raceline and the lady I spoke with transferred me to a guy that did some measurements for me and the ones I liked cleared by about a 1/4 inch. So I ordered one from summit as I could return it . Taped up the back as not to scratch it and test fitted it and it clearered . I say try calling the manufacturer of the wheel you like and see if they will help. You may get lucky or strike out as I did with some.

Don't know what they are talking about. There were never any special TRD brakes. The only brakes that cause fitment issues are the Tundra upgrades. I bought aftermarket wheels in 16" and have no problem. Hell, there are a dozen people I can think off the top of my head that run 16" aftermarket wheels.

The one thing you have to watch is back spacing and offset. An almost perfect fitment is 16x8 with a 4.5" backspace and -6mm offset. That's what I run with 33"s installed. Clear the caliper, tires clear the UCA, and I have no rub under normal driving. A 16" wheel with too much or too little backspacing can cause rubbing, but that's not a size problem.

Don't let them tell you that you need 17" wheels to fit, they're full of sh*t.

Take a look at discounttiredirect.com at their wheel selection. That's where I found mine. If you see one you like, call them up and they'll let you know what specs you need.

Well, I called them, talked to a guy that got me all squared away...ordered Level 8 Strike 6 (black), with 285/75/16 Kumho Road Venture MT's. Mounted/balanced, lugs included, and shipped for free. Supposed to get them next week. Can't wait!! Thanks!:cheers:

Awesome. I've always had success dealing with DTD. I'm partial to your wheels as well, just in a different finish. Just so you know, they work with the Tundra brake upgrade as well if you choose to do it (with 33s I suggest you eventually do it).

Do you know if anyone has tried +20 offset wheels? I do not know much about wheels but some are available for cheap.
