Help a Brother on the Trail!

Hi guys! I've been lurking around for a while and I think you've got a good thing going on here. I'm ready to buy my first rig but got totally screwed out of getting the sweet '97 4x4 5speed i've been eyeing for a week. Now I'm going crazy trying to find another one within 500 miles of me. There is a pretty sweet '95 I could go buy right now but it's not my first choice. I'm really itching to buy one ASAP but I don't want to regret it. Any help you guys can provide on the following subjects would be highly appreciated.

1) Should I just get the Red '95 4x4 5speed that's totally clean or should I hold out for a cherry 3rd gen that may come to market soon?
2) Can you help me find a solid 3rd gen 4x4 5speed 4Runner in the southern California area?

I appreciate your help on this gentlemen!

What engine is in the '95? If it's the 3.0l V6 I would say pass on it. That engine has a ton of head gasket issues.
 
The third gen V6 has more power than the 2nd gen V6, better mileage, and is more reliable. That's the reason I held out for a third gen...
 
It is definitely worth the wait to hold out for a 3rd gen. I know it sucks now, but once you finally get one it will be awesome and better than the 2nd gen. It ended up taking me between 4-6 months to find what i wanted in a 4runner
 
wait for a 3rd gen for sure. That sucks you missed out on the 97, I bought my runner in Oceanside and had to be super patient just to find one with 4x4 in good condition. I remember looking though craigslist and autotrader and the ratio of 4x4 to 4x2 listings was like 1 in 10! Thats just how it is in socal though.... Went through the same thing when I bought a tacoma prior to the 4runner. Patience man, you will not regret waiting for the right one.

Wait , Wait good things are worth the wait.

I got lucky I came home from work one day told the wife hey lets go see if we can find a 4runner and trade the subie just to see whats out there and what we can get trade in. We pulled in the first lot there, it was in all its glory 2000 sport 4x4. We left about 5hrs later done deal had to give them a few days to clean it up and service it before we could pick it up as it had just been traded in for a new highlander. this was in OC CA. You wont get a lemon at Toyota of Orange! There add campaign. Sorry for straying from topic a bit.
 
I also saw a nice looking one off of harbor blvd near commonwealth to the south and past the overpass on the right probably 4x2 but will be passing by there later today and can check it out. It is on a small lot. There is also a decent 4x2 with total chaos front long travle lifted front saggy rear set up in Baldwin Park for just under $6000. I' always on the lookout so if I see anything I'll let you know.
 
Thanks John but I'm all too aware of the challenge that lay ahead of me. But Drifter I really do appreciate your input, thanks for keeping and eye out for me. You are very local to me so I definitely thank you for your efforts and keep me updated for sho :biggrin2:

Yeah that's what I figured with my luck this week :( I appreciate the effort to check it out for me though drifter. I've been running into so many 2wd or auto I'm almost thinking I should just get the 2wd 5speed...

But check out what just hit the market!

Don't do it. It's a good looking 4Runner for sure, but that 3.0l V6 blows compared to the 3.4l V6. I had a 1991 that went through 2 head gaskets and have had three friends who have owned the same engine with the same results.

Hold out for a 3rd gen!
 
I second Hepar on this one. Don't do it! I have a 2nd gen have regretted not spending the extra cash and getting a 3rd gen. The 3.0 is horrible on gas and has no power. I like the look of the 2nd gen, but the comfort aspects of the 3rd gen is so much better. Just hold out and you will find the right vehicle. It really will be worth it in the end.
