Help a Brother on the Trail!

be patient and wait for a 3rd gen. I found my last one - a 2000 highlander edition with 90k and an elocker - after checking the local craigslist everyday for a little over a month and then that new listing popped up. i called within 30min of him posting the ad and went and swooped it up real quick. he said he had 8 people call right after I did ready to buy. So don't force yourself into buying one just because you want one right at the moment...you'll see one and absolutely know you should buy it lol... also keep in mind why the owner is selling his runner in the first place
 
Wait for a good one. I just found mine a few weeks ago. I was a hawk on C-list, Autotrader, Cars.com. I saw one that popped up on Autotrader and bought it about a week later. The 3rd gens, around the Philadelphia area, are selling fast right now, not sure if its that way all around the country. I figured it was because they are a great truck and the prices are coming into the 5-7k price range that a lot of people look for. That doesnt meen you need to be in a rush to buy either. I took my time and looked at mine twice before deciding on it. I also checked out 2 other ones (junk!) before I test drove this one.

I went from not knowing or even considering a 4runner to a full blown internet researcher on them. Wait for the 3rd gen, you will not be dissapointed.
 
Thanks cek I've definitely become a bird of prey over the last few days looking for the right truck to build. I'm hoping to get lucky and come up on a cherry whip like you and downpour. BTW much love to downpour! I def didn't forget about you... Thanks for the posts brother, much appreciated! Also a big thanks to everybody for all the moral support if it wasn't for you guys I'd look like this guy :wtf:
 
Just to add another voice here, 3rd gen is the BEST gen ever made, imo. I highly recommend picking up a 3rd gen over 2nd (or even over 4th, 5th etc). The body style is awesome and everything else is awesome. I think I'll keep a 3rd gen in my arsenal forever... maybe I'll have to learn to machine some parts eventually, but it'll be worth it! =)
 
It took me 4 months to find the right runner and it was worth the wait. The 3.slow is the worst motor toyota has ever made. Just relax and wait until the right 3rd gen comes on the market rather then buying something right now.

Remember good deals always come out when it gets closer to xmas since this is the time of the year people need cash more for xmas presents
 
Don't be scared of traveling a bit too. I live in Seattle and found mine in San Jose through CL. Cost me $100 for the plane ticket and about $150-200 in gas and misc food for the drive back. Not to mention it was a gorgeous drive too.

I'll keep my eyes out up here, but the local market is sort of high on Toyotas. What are your "must have's" on one?

Also thanks to all you guys for the help on clearing up the e-locker debate. 8 I appreciate the heads up but Maryland is just a little far away but that is a totally cherry whip :biggrin2:

You got it. And if you ever find anything serious up here, let me know and I'll go check it out. Oh and you have an airport shuttle here if need be too.

So, what are you looking for specifically? Price? Mileage range? Things you don't want on it?
 
Nice! Thanks Hepar :D It absolutely needs to be a third gen 4x4 5 speed. Other than that it just has to have a clean interior and be in generally good mechanical condition. I don't want to have to dump a bunch of money in it just to get to work and take chicks out. I'd like to have some cool mods on it already but just a good clean stock one would be best. The only definite is I won't drive the blue one... :nono:

oops forgot to address price and mileage, they are pretty much just a matter of value... I wouldn't mind 300k as long as it was well maintained and still runs strong but my target would be 150k or less. I can pay upto $7k but trying to negotiate everything to as close to $5k as I can... Thanks again to everybody, it's you guys that makes this forum great :cheers:
