Help a newbie choose the right setup:)

Hi everyone!

I have to say that I am impressed with the information posted on here: I've learned a lot, considering that I've never owned a 4runner, until now

I just bought an older 1998 SR5, 4WD, with about 140k miles on it and I'd like to make some cheap improvements for off-road driving (80% of my driving would be off-road). I don't plan to tow anything, but the car most of the time would have 5 people with tons of camping gear in it.

Anyway, I am looking to get a 3'' lift, so I wonder the best/cheapest setup that would allow me this.

I was thinking to get some OME 881 in front and OME 890 in the back.
At the same time, some better tires for offroad: maybe DuraTrac 265/75/16? I do not think mudtires would be required as I am not going that much on real crazy back-roads

Sounds like a good setup. The Complete OME Lift on the Toytec site went up in price. If you want to match those coils with Bilsteins, I found it to be a little cheaper if you buy the parts separately on their site. I like the setup that you have in mind. I would run with it. Sounds like a true setup and won't steer you wrong.

I would go with a Bilstein Tundra 5100 setup with Eibach coils or some OME setup. I don't know much on OME setups but there are many threads on here that argue/debate and show BEFORE and AFTERS of the lift systems installed. Just take a gander at them and see if that's what you want. The most abundant lifts people have on here are from Toytec and are usually Bilsteins with Eibachs or the Old Man Emu setups.

Use the Search function at the top and use phrases like, "3 inch lift kit 3rd gen, lift kit options, etc."

And don't forget to look into Steeze's awesome thread which goes into much detail on various lift systems.

I wish you luck and remember to go with something a bit stiffer, like a Tundra system vs. a Tacoma system.

So to make sure I understand this lifting business:for my proposed setup do I mandatory need to get matching shocks(Bilsteins and such..)?

Sorry if this seems obvious to you, but I am really a newbie at this.

It's not "matching" per say. But you need to match lengths. If you do a three inch lift you will need longer shocks. If you order an OME kit it will come with the right shocks. You could order it all separately but there's no point. Any OME or Toytec kit will come with the correct shocks.

If your like me and you dont like the saggy looking rear end and want a little more flex you could look for some used 7-8 wrap coils and get 3.5-4" lift. I love my 7 wraps, they outflex my buddys ome rears easily but they dont handle weight in the rear as good as his coils.
