HELP - Accidentally added T-IV to Dexron III

when you guys say flush do you mean with the machine.

The flush I'm referring to is without the machine. A flush just means that nearly all the old fluid is exchanged with new fluid, as opposed to a drain and fill.

Is there a TSB specifying that Dexron III may be replaced with T IV in Toyota transmissions?

What Quicksilvr said is right. You use the transmissions pump to get the fluid out and just pour new fluid in through the dipstick as the old fluid is coming out.

How about a gravity feed arrangement on the return line?

No opinions on the Valvoline Max Life Dex/Merc that I mixed in when I did a drain and fill? I am starting to have second thoughts that I should have just stuck with standard Dex III.

How about a gravity feed arrangement on the return line?

That would accomplish the same as pouring in through the dipstick tube. The input rate doesn't have to match the output rate as long as you start at an adequate fluid level and continue adding fluid the entire time it's being pumped out. The process takes a few minutes max and can be done continuously.

Just turn the engine off after every qt. or 2 that it pumps out so you can catch up because it pumps out a lot faster than you can pour it down the dipstick tube.

Valvoline Max Life Dex/Merc is compatible with Dex III. It's fine.

that tsb is from may 2002,alot as change from then and toyota stop selling dexIII. T-IV is a upgrade, i was having minor shifting issues with my solara i switched over to T-IV problem solved. its been 60k and 1 flush, 1 drain and refill with T-IV no issues in fact improvemnt.

I have never heard from Toyota that you can substitute Dexron for T-IV. I will look into it myself, but if you can justify our members by showing them an official Toyota bulletin, I advise our members NOT to take Brooklyn's advice. I'm not trying to sound like an ass, but until you can show us the official "OK" from Toyota. Using a T-IV in a dexron is horse poop. T-IV and Dexron have different friction modifiers and such, if the wrong fluid gets absorbed into the clutch packs and the intermediate band in the transmission NO FLUSHING will get that out, it doesn't matter how many times you flush it.

i honestly would only use toyota trans fluid.

I went to Toyota Dealership in Maryland and they wouldn't sell me "Toyota brand Dexron II or III", they suggested Quaker State ATF which they had on the shelf. I've personally never been a fan of Quaker State Oil... So I decided to go with Penzoil, I use Penzoil engine oil for all my vehicles, so I thought It'd be a good idea to be consistent and go with my more favorable yet affordable brand... Of course with my luck after I dropped the pan I found out that there was a 5 day back order on my Tranny filter, so now the truck is sitting there still dripping oil after two days. I have to wait another 4 days to recieve the filter to finish my flush process.

Before I dropped the pan, the 4R was shifting gears as good as ever. I'm just hoping I havn't set my tranny up for failure over the long run by mixing T-IV... (cross fingers)

I think it would take a while for T-IV to actaully do damage. My guess is you caught it before anything bad happened.

I just found out the filter is on a national back order, is it a good idea to use an aftermarket filter from auto zone?

I personally won't go to autozone anymore because they SUCK and they've sold me too many wrong parts (including the wrong tranny filter among dozens of other wrong parts thoughout the years). Go to O'reilly, Napa or just about anyone else. You could also just clean your stock filter with brake cleaner and re-use it.

Reviving this thread, looking for some double checking of what was said here a while ago.

Over the weekend I replaced the timing belt and radiator. Lost about 1.5-2 quarts of tranny fluid when I drained the radiator. I was at the Toyota dealer to get red coolant and decided to pick up tranny fluid too, to top off what was lost. I have a 1999 Limited 2wd Automatic, they told me that I needed T-IV. Went to top it off today, and didn't think to check if it was indeed the correct fluid until after I already did it (stupid I know, but it has been a long weekend and I just wanted to get it done). I need to drive this tomorrow for work and may not have time to do a transmission flush for a couple weeks.

My question is in practice how incompatible are T-IV and Dex II/III at this quantity, and will I be fine putting like a hundred easy miles on it without doing any damage?

Doesn't the bottle tell which vehicles it's not compatable with?

I know the TAAT auto in the Saturn is on that list.

T-I, T-II, T-III and T-IV are backwards compatible with Dex III, you should be fine.

I switched to Valvoline MaxLife DEX/MERC (was cheaper than Mobil 1) which in the fine print says Toyota Type T-I, TIII and T-IV compatible, and so do lots of other ATFs out there today.

T-IV is basically a standard Dex-III product with more advanced friction modifiers. Since the time it was developed the whole industry has advanced and the new fluids surpass the standards of both. T-IV does not have superior basestocks or fluid qualities. T-IV was designed to be backward compatible with Dex III and will probably work fine in the 98-99 transmission especially since they are basically the same unit.

The Type T-# fluids were used in the Lexus models before Toyota started using the Type T-IV. Lexus had T-I, T-II, & T-III, which were all replaced by Type T-IV.

There are internet references to a TSB referencing T-IV as the preferred fluid for many other Toyota cars that initially called for DEX II/III like our dipsticks do. I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Yea, I found a reference to Dex 4 but was under the impression that it was only ever available from the dealer and only for a short period of time before Dex 6 came out.

My friend that runs the parts department at a local GM dealer and a avid Toyota owner says that Dex 6 is indeed good for the A340 trans.
