HELP!! Can't decide - OME or SS 1.2, Going Crazy....

Hey Guys, I know there are a LOT of threads on this already. This however is part of my problem ! I've been going over this for months now, on multiple boards. I am hoping those who have personal experience with OME or SS lift kits can chime in on this one... THE FACTS: '99 (Tall) V6 running on 265/75/16s. Currently has stock bumpers, but tubes both front and rear are on the horizon (perhaps Savage Off Road). I intend to put a winch out front, one day. I do on occasion tow with it. It is not a DD. It gets driven very little and only after one of us takes off with the 5th Gen Trail. I am ultimately looking for some clearance (+2.5" - 3") as the cross ditches on the local FSRs seem to be getting deeper. As well, it would be nice to not have the headlights pointed into the sky when I load up the back and pull the trailer ! Save me from going blind, searching the interweb incessantly! Thanks

I just had my ss 1.2 installed today. I am incredibly happy with the ride quality and look. Comfortably fits 285/75/16 (although i'm going larger w/ a body lift) and looks MEAN! I would say that with you wanting to add the bumpers and extra trail gear this would be the lift to go with. Steve at Sonoran Steel is very accommodating and responds to any questions promptly. I'd say give the SS 1.2 a go!
 
If you plan on putting a tube rear AND pack it full of gear, I might stay with the OME's. Especially since this isn't your DD.

On a side note, have you looked at the Badland tube bumpers? I love mine and it's local to me. I'll be making plenty of trips to Squamish, so I could always throw one in the back and save you the shipping!
 
I have OME 883s up front and 891s in the rear, 3" lift.

I have heard some say they think these are bit stiff, myself I like them, I am not expecting my 4 Runner to ride like my wifes Lexus.
We are going to use it for camping and will be pretty loaded up when we do so I am glad it came with 883/891 coil set up. To me it feels perfect.

Running 255/75R17 (32') tires which are a happy medium.

So I am very pleased with the OME 3" Lift with 883/891 set up.

It feels like a solid truck and when I put the brakes on firmly like I just had to do about 2 hours ago there is virtually no dip in the front at all, just comes to a stop staying pretty much level which gives me a feeling of stability and decent handling which I think you sometimes lose with a lifted vehicle.
 
If you go with SS be sure to get the kit with adjustable Bilstiens.

I have the SS and am very happy. I decided to spend the extra cash because i wanted the Toyota parts. I assumed that Toyota coils and struts are superior to the OME. I have no factual basis for this since I don't know anyone who has the OME setup.

The reason I bought the SS is because I didn't know ANYTHING about suspensions and wanted a bolt on kit that was made for my 4Runner year. A lot of guys have OME though and once they pick the right parts for their year, they seem pretty happy. The ride with SS 1.2 is actually quite nice, as good as new stock setup.

The OMEs are much cheaper, and as far as sag rates go and how quick they wear out - they are FAR superior to Toyota coils IMO. If you know what kind of weight you'll be running in the end, you can get the right OME coils and be done with it for a lot less cash and have an equally good lift as the SS.1.2.

There's no need for adjustability if you know the weight you will have in the end. But if you are getting the lift now, skids and sliders in 6 months, the bumpers in a year, a winch the next year, then your weight will constantly be changing. If you buy the stiff OMEs (like 883s), you'll probably not like the ride until you get all that weight. If you go with too light of coils (like 881s), they'll ride good now, but they won't support the weight of a bumper and winch too well down the road.

If you are going to be piecing together the heavy mods on your truck over time, I would get the SS 1.2 or another adjustable option (like Toytec coilovers up front and OMEs in the rear). But if you will have those mods in the near future, I would save the cash and get OMEs.

I've been reading about 3rd gen suspension options for a while and this paragraph has put it all together for me.
 
The are both good lifts, you won't "go wrong" with either one. I have OME in my Tacoma and wanted to try something different (Didn't think OME was perfect, a little stiff for me). I went with SS1.2 on the 4runner, and think it's worth the money for the help that Steve at Sonoran provides alone.

They are both good, I don't think anyone would argue the Sonoran is the best overall while the OME is certainly the best for the buck. my 2 cents.. hope it helps.
 
Thanks to you all for your input and for restoring my faith in this forum. This was my first posting and when NO ONE responded for months, I almost quit in disgust. :smashputer: I must say I was surprised when I saw this thread on top today!:thanks:

Thanks Brian, That was my thought process as well. I didn't want to be constantly swapping out springs each time I added onto the front.

Hepar, Yes I have checked out their stuff. Its great to hear positive feedback from an owner too! That is amazing of you to offer :hatsoff: to bring me one. Luckily, I have family in Ballard that I visit with some frequency, so its no problem for me to swing over there. Squamish you say? Have you been up behind Brittania Mine yet?

x200 on Steve and I'm very happy with the 1.2. I installed it myself a year and a half ago, talked to Steve a few times during the install- he was very helpful with excellent tips, the truck is a daily driver and I do tow occasionally.
 
Steve @ Sonoran Steel is the man. good products and he's got alot of 4runner knowledge. and if you do get the 1.2, follow the instructions, there's a lot of minute details that need attention.

as far as the products go, putting all Toyota stuff back on my vehicle doesnt hurt my feelings. I like the fact that we can still get what we want with a product that we know was made by Toyota.


AND, an arb aint gonna do a whole lot to the tundra coils up front on the 1.2 lift.

Wow. That looks really cool. Had no idea that was up there. I only go up there to climb. Would be pretty cool to get a group together and check that out sometime.
