HELP Coilovers vs. Springs/Shocks?

Forgive me for being an amateur here but its been a hell of a day and I could really use some T4R experienced advice.

Background info: I drive an 08 SR5 4x4 with 96,000 miles on it. Last year I installed the Daystar 2.5/1.5 spacer lift along with 255/75R17 Goodyear Duratracs.

I recently started having issues with loud humming. I found out that my alignment was off and I hadn't been getting my tires rotated near enough and so I had cupping on my driver side tire. I got it aligned and tires rotated. After I left it felt like my steering wheel was slightly off to the right and even felt a tad sloppy from the 10-2 o'clock positions. So today I came back in, he re-did the alignment and said that the tire should wear back down now that the alignment is fixed. I pulled out, made it a mile down the road and still felt like the steering wheel had to be turned slightly to the right to keep going straight. Took it right back. The mechanic took it for a spin and when he came back he took it right back onto the lift. Gave it a good look and noticed some slight play in the tie rods. So $475 later I now have new inner and outer tie rods.

He also said that it looks like my suspension up front is probably starting to go. So he said that he will get me a quote for coil-overs that will get me the 2inch lift I currently have. When talking with him, I asked if our 4th gen 4Runners already have "coil-overs" or if it just a coil spring with a shock? Like I said, I'm an amateur but aren't coil-overs different? He said that my car comes with coil-overs stock. Is that right?

What the difference in the springs/shocks that come stock on a 4th gen runner compared to a coil-over? Excuse my ignorance but it looks like coil-overs are very expensive upgrades that would drastically improve off-road performace. But really I don't plan to do any off-roading and really just want my car back to good highway performance...

Any tips on what I should do would be greatly appreciated. As well as an explanation on coil-overs vs. coil springs with shocks.

Thanks for helping this broke high school teacher out!

The stock front suspension are coilovers meaning the coil is mounted over the shock.

There are adjustable coilovers that have a collar threaded around the shock body that allows easy height adjustment on the vehicle, this is what most higher-end shocks have.

You can replace just the shocks, just the springs, or both. Sounds like you might benefit from a set of Bilstein 5100 shocks with your stock springs, according to your mechanic, though unless they are leaking or are no longer damping your springs when driving (springy ride), it's hard to say if they need replaced or not.

I am not experiencing any “bouncing” coming off of speed bumps, nor any nose diving when braking. Honestly I’m doubtful about needing new front suspension....and money is tight paired with needing a brake job and just finding some rotting wood under my house.

If you have 96k on your stick suspension then you are due for a shock change. How handy are you? Between youtube, autozone, and this website you can really upgrade your ride and save some dough.

In all honesty, if you are a bit handy but squeemish about tackling a big job like this, I wold did the brakes and let the pro do the shocks.

Where are you in NC? I have a guy who is a lexus master tech that does part time work in durham. He is super good, expertly trained, and very reasonable.
