Help! - Coolant leak

Well - it's confirmed - leaking at the water pump.

$1150 estimate.

I'll love to see the timing belt and see if I was lied to about the belt and WP being changed at 105K.

Shitty. Could be inferior part or poor installation. The metal gaskets that comes with an Aisin pump are unbeatable. But shops do cut corners on quality quite often to lower their cost. I refuse to use anything but Aisin water pumps on the Japanese cars.

That being said, it's not a terrible job by any means. Toughest part would likely be crankshaft bolt removal. Otherwise basic hand tools will get you there: 10, 12, 14, 17mm deep and shallow sockets and a ratchet. And a 10mm Allen for the tensioner swivel bolt if you're replacing that too. It's a simple engine when you start taking things apart. Toyota is really good about ease of maintenance.

Good luck.

So I got the quote and here's the breakdown:

AC Delco water pump & timing belt component kit - $467
Camshaft seal 2 @ $14
Crankshaft seal 1 @ 13
Coolant & shop supplies $57
Labor 5 @ $96 = $480
With tax = $1,150

I trust this shop but the component kit gives me pause. I'm thinking of tackling this with my brother in law and Tim's video. I've started it and it looks like even I can follow along!

Do it Dude! Take up the challenge.

Tim, I think we're gonna do it over Thanksgiving. We are going to watch your video and I'll let you know if any questions arise.

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

Make sure you read through the video description. We give links to the parts and special tools we used along with other tricks to get the timing belt on easier and all the associated torque specs.

ac delco? trash. get a toyota kit from ebay. for 1100, come down to tampa and pay me to do it, and you'll still have money left over.

I’d be curious to know if the PO torqued the pump bolts properly? I would think even a cheap pump would last longer than 26k.

You got this but something to consider anytime you're doing work with multiple parts needing to be replaced, make a list of EVERYTHING you need & review it a few times to make sure you have all the parts checked off the list. It sucks when you're halfway into a project only to realize you're missing a $5 part and can't continue without it & find out that the dealer is closed or the part needs to be shipped. Because of the unknown factors (broken bolts, stripped fasteners, wrong part, installation gone wrong resulting in a broken new part, etc), I like to give myself a full weekend just in case I run into any delays.

If the shop you trust charges $480 in labor for the full job, and you can supply the parts, that's less than $1100 all in. Also, if you don't do the crank/can seals how would the labor change?

Aside from the cost/quality of parts from a shop, if you're gonna do it yourself what tools do you need to buy that you can't rent/borrow, and if you depend on the vehicle for fault transportation, can you risk being without it if you can't complete or yourself or run into a problem?

It's basically a business decision, the way I look at it, but everyone is different. Just food for thought.

Well, to tie this thread up, I ended up taking it to another shop that I'd had my eye on. The original quote was $100 less than the first shop and I ended up paying $1035 for waterpump & seal, timing belt, thermostat & seal, tensioner, rollers, upper and lower radiator hose, and coolant flush.

I asked to see the parts to see if the pump and belt was changed like the seller told me. The belt was a Gates and the owner said it had been changed before. Nothing looked like it was worn, so if the belt was changed at 90K it only had 40K on it. The pump seal must've started leaking.
