Can anyone tell me the purpose of this repair? I guess they replaced the "Rear axle chunk," but I was also wondering if the rear seals were replaced (the ones that typically leak on 4Runners).

I ask because I brought it to Midas to have it looked over prior to my buying it, and I was told my right rear oil seal on the differential needs replacing. I looked underneath and there was old dried oil around the RR brake area, and it was distinctly different from the left rear (no dried oil). It also looks NOTHING like the example on the forum of leaking seals in the common problems thread, with lots of fresh oil leaking out.

I thought maybe because it looked dried that it was a problem that was already fixed previously, and Midas just seeing if I would go for the repair.

any ideas?

FWIW, there is no part in the 4Runner called a "Chunk".

From reading their description, I would guess that the Tech that drove the vehicle is describing one of the noises he heard, as a "chunk", which was loud. And he also heard grinding and groaning.

Probably a typo by the advisor. "clunk" vs "chunk"... either way they replaced the axle.

if you no how to read this properly you would no that the chunk that got replaced is the full differental gears and yes the seals where replaced . Also they probly replaced the full chunk so they no it had all new bearings and plus its alot easier then fighting with them and to make sure that any noise that was heard was fixed
