Help diagnose my brake problem?

My rear brakes are making a groaning noise when I stop. It was intermittent before but now it seems like every time I stop. It groans right before I stop. Sounds like they are wet, but they're not. Toyota inspected them and said they are fine. Any idea what the noise is or how to get rid of it. It's more annoying and embarrassing than anything else. Its a low "groaning" noise that sounds as if the brakes are slipping or something, but braking performance isn't effected. Any ideas???

The crunching noise is common. You can try aftermarket pads, but expect more dust and your crunch could change to a squeal. Anti squeal on the backs of the pads and anti seize on the hardware will help to keep it to a minimum.

The groan usually happens when they get glazed over. I was thinking if you got new pads but not new rotors that it would explain the situation.

I'd probably take it all apart, clean thoroughly with brake cleaner, then reassemble with caliper grease so they can slide freely. That will also give you a chance to inspect your calipers for seizing issues as that it a common failure on these trucks.

Any particular brand/product? Can i do this without taking the wheel off?

You will need to take the wheels off to get to the caliper. The pins can be lubricated by removing the cotter pins. To put shims or spray the back of the pads you will need to remove the pads. All fairly easy, but since it is your brakes, make sure you know what you are doing.

I may take you up on that. I don't have a great place to do anything though. You know of anywhere?

There's a sweet parking lot behind the place that I lived last school year where I used to do and plan to still do all the work on my truck that I can't do in a parking space on the street. I've had it in the air before and no one gave me a problem
