Help diagnose "thud"

I have a "thud" over potholes and bumps that I cannot track down.
2017 Runner. I have Kings w/700 coils, JBA control arms... everything only has like 6000 miles on it. Lift set at 2.25". All sway bars removed.

So far I've torqued everything I could get my hands on in the front end included LCA cam bolts, shocks, UCA's. There's no play that I can see in the ball joints/bushings, tie rods..etc.

I took a quick video this morning over some some washboards. It's kind of hard to hear in the video. You can hear it the most at the beginning. It's not the higher pitched rattling going on but the deeper "thuds" (deeper rattle). It's driving me crazy because I'm OCD with noises.

While parked I can jump up and down on bumper, shake truck side to side, turn steering wheel back and fourth... I cannot reproduce noise. Only when going under 60kms/hr over bumps/pot holes/washboards.

It only occurs when drivers side goes over bumps. I cannot reproduce on passenger side.

Could be the shocks. I get a thud/chatter going over small bumps while under 45 mph. Gets worse if it is cold out, goes away if over 90F or so. I have OME BP-51 shocks, supposedly it has something to do with the valving. Mine are getting replaced under warranty as they released a revision that does not make noise. Might be worth checking out to see if others with Kings experienced something similar!

I've got kings, and that's not normal. They gobble up stuff like that.


Let's start at the beginning.... are you certain that your emergency jack is tightened so that it is not rattling around in the bracket?

How about your rear hatch? my striker was loose at one point and it damn near drove me nuts.

Are you positive that the noise is in the front? I had a spent bearing in my rear shock lower mount that made a racket over bumps. I had to go slowly over a bump a few times to be certain that it only occurred at the rear

Jack is completely removed so it's not that. Everything from console and glove box removed. Rear latch seems ok. I tried with seats up and down noise is still there. If I go super slow like walking speed it wont do it. It's more between 20-60 kms/hr.

Next I'm going to take off skids and check all connections to the ARB bumper, but you would think if that was it I could reproduce by shaking or jumping on bumper which I can't.

It only does it when drivers side hit a bumps. Passenger quiet as can be.

It does sound like it's something to do with drivers side suspension but sounds can be tricky to pin point.

I know it''s hard to figure it out from a video. Just fishing for ideas or if I overlooked anything.

I know that it wouldn't be normal for Kings- my point was that it might be something broken in the shock. If it only happens at certain speeds with certain amounts of wheel travel and only on a certain corner, it sounds an awful lot like an issue with a shock. Have heard the noise myself in other vehicles with broken/damaged/poorly valved shocks. Essentially a light thump/chatter each time the wheel travels. Just something to look into.
 
I had a suspension related noise that I assumed came from the front, but after having someone else drive it, I heard it from the outside and pinpointed it was coming from the rear driver side. In my case, it turned out to be the driver side rear lower shock mount. I was able to get someone to jump up and down on my sliders and I could feel vibration coming from the shock body. I took it apart and reinstalled it. No more noise.
 
That doesn't look normal to be sure. Listening to your other video of the clunking itself it does sound similar to mine, albeit significantly louder.
 
Solved! My drivers side CV AXLE. Full of play/slop. Put it on the hoist, grabbed CV Axle and reproduced sound. Now to deal with Toyota warranty.

Might throw the ECGS clam shell bushing in there at the same time.

Follow up with how it goes! Curious to know since I am considering lifting soon and want know if they will cover it still!

In my experience in cases like this it largely depends on the relationship you have with your service department.

Not covered. Getting parts at cost. They said if it were last year no prob but they really been cracked down on from Toyota Canada when it comes to modded rigs. He said if I had the stock coilovers and swapped them back on they could do it but I don't and don't know of anyone around local that has any.

I had a similar thud in my truck that I couldn't locate and it turned out to be the sway bar bushings. I have KDSS so it is a bit different but I would check them.

My "old" bushings were visually identical to the new ones i put in but they were a bit harder. Once replaced the thud was gone and 10,000 miles later it is still not there.

I felt the thud under my feet when driving when I had it.

My Sway Bars are completely removed front and rear.
