Help finding a key FOB for 2002

I just recently picked up a 2002 4runner sr5, it did not come with any key FOB for keyless entry, just the physical keys. I would like to buy a key fob and program it to work, I assume that I can on my car even though it didn't come with one? (It might have from the dealership 15 years ago, it just didn't make it all the way to me). I have found other posts that say you need to buy one with a matching FCC ID, but since I don't have the original where can I get the FCC ID from? Or if I don't really need that, would this fob work (link)? If not can you guys point me towards one that will that hopefully isn't too bad on my wallet? (I'm really digging that $20 price tag if that one will work, I know the ones on newer cars can cost upwards of $200 to replace)

I bought a key fob off line for my 2006 Tacoma a few years ago. There was a song/dance/brake/off-on combination that had to be done to make it work with the vehicle but after that it has worked ever since then. The fob should come with programming instructions.
 
Do you know for a fact it has keyless entry?

Check out this thread, and do the programming process to see if it will go into programming mode to confirm it actually has a keyless system. If your actuators are weak, make sure you see where you can move the locks manually to finish the process.

There was records in my VIN history of work being done on mine with the keyless fobs, so I knew it had the feature and I got a pair of fobs online and it worked great.

No, I don't know if it came with it or not, I never thought to confirm it has it by doing the programming sequence so I'll give that a try today. If it turns out that I do have keyless entry, will that fob I linked work? And if I don't is it easy and/or feasible to add it?

It looks like the ones I got off Amazon, it's very likely it will work but I won't say with 100% certainty.

Mine were really easy to add, follow the instructions and read that thread before you start. Took less than 5 minutes.

Yes, that fob you linked has the magic FCC ID HYQ1512Y that works for '99-'02.

An SR5 should have it, only the base model left it out from '99 on, I think.

If you don't have it, adding it will be tough. Need to swap out the Body ECU AND the Back-door ECU and that is big $$$, even used. Another way to tell is look for the chirper thingy on the passenger fender wall in the corner close to the firewall. No chirper, no keyless.(You would also have to add that.)

Call your local stealership and they can tell you if you have the option or not. I called and gave them my VIN took them all but 10 mins to look into it.
 
I found one in the junkyard. Free-fitty.

It was an amusingly complicated sequence of ignition on/off door open/shut doors locked/unlocked to get it into programming mode, and even then I got stuck a few times when it would recognize the fob was there, but wouldn't do anything afterward. Finally, I found a set of instructions (sorry, can't find them easily now) that said to clear all existing fobs out of the system before adding them all back in, and that worked. Junkyard fob has been working great for a couple of years so far.

I think *MOST* 99+ 3rd gens have the hardware on the trucks. It was hit and miss in 96-98 trucks, and they didn't all have the same style IIRC. But 99+, almost all of them had it from the factory. It's easy to spot that module shown above.
 
Wow thanks for all the help guys! I got a chance to try the programming sequence and it worked, and for good measure, I checked in the fender well for the chirper and it has that too! So I definitely have the hardware for it, now I just need the FOB. I just ordered this one from Amazon (link), it's only $16 and if it doesn't work I can take advantage of Amazon's amazing return policy. I'll report back here once I get it and see if it will program to the car or not.
 
make sure the lock actuators are strong. my driver side one was weak and it took me a while to program the fob. it did it though. replaced the actuators at a later date.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by that, but they all open and close the locks with no issues/lag, so I guess they are strong? They don't have any troubles actuating the locks
 
I went here and ordered one. https://www.remotesremotes.com/ It looks perfect and functions great. My only complaint is that the range isn't so good so you've got to be closer to the rig for it to work. They have quick shipping and include programming instructions which worked great. It cost me around $20

if the actuators are weak, it will take a while to program if at all. i've seen them where they wouldn't and the lock actuator or actuators needed to be replaced before programming the fob.
