hi every one i am new and speak french ....
but i realy want to buy a 4 runner and need some healp to get a good year i have a small $$$ 6000 $ to 7500 $ what wold be the best year i will be flying in florida from canada and plan on driving back with the new toyota... thank and pleas d'ont ***** on the spelling.

Yeah, it really does depend what you will use it for. But, the most desired year for a lot of people is 1999 because of it's off-road advantages. The 1999 4Runner Highlander is popular, since it has taller coils, a rear diff locker, and the hood scoop. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the Highlanders also have the multi-mode transfer case which would let you use 4wd on dry pavement.

If you want a manual 5spd transmission, 1996-2000 had these manual trannys, but they were discontinued in the 01 and 02's.

01's and 02's are good if you don't plan on doing too much off-roading, since some come with a center diff, which gives better handling on roads with snow, etc.

Or you could get a 96-98 to avoid having the fat-lip bumper. The 96-98's also have less electronic gadgets (no digital odometer, no digital climate controls, etc.), which some people prefer. For me, having less digital stuff is ok and it isn't really a big problem. The only problem with 96-98's are the crappy pull out cupholders.

No. Only the limiteds had this feature in 1999 - 2000.

Also you don't need a Highlander to get the tall coils. All 99's had the tall coils (mine sure as hell does!)

If I understand correctly (from the "99 most desirable" thread) the Highlander package basically gives you a hood scoop and different fender flares, along with some more attractive paint options. IOW the Highlander package was a cosmetic package - mechanically it's an SR5.
