HELP - Front Grill and Rear Decorative Panel Removal 09 prep for paint

Need some help. I have to remove the parts below in preparation for painting so I can remove the plastip and chrome finish and my painter won't paint over any plastic chrome and I've got a few solutions but don't know the best way to move them so just reaching out.

The grille comes off with IIRC 8 nuts on the backside. Most likely you will end offbuying another grille because the studs are housed in thin plastic that breaks apart with any amount of torque and then the grille is useless. I have yet to see a grille that was taken off and all the studs survive.

The rear is accessed by pulling off the inner plastic tailgate cover and the moisture shield. There are 4 nuts I think and a plastic clip on the top in the middle. Those usually come off ok. The nuts front and rear take a 10mm socket.

I advise when you reassemble anything on a 4runner use antisieze, it's your friend.

Agree. Open the hood and start removing 10 mm bolts, but liberally apply your favorite lubricant the day before and you may want some heat. If youre lucky, you'll have enough left over to re-attach

After you remove the plastidip (WD40 works well) if its chrome, its actually like a chrome tape. My starting bubbling, so I used a scraping tool to remove it all so I could repaint. The tape/ chrome is sharp, so be careful

Thanks, what is the "technical term or naming convention" for the piece on the rear tailgate? Some crazy name I am sure, I cannot find anything anywhere incase I screw it up and need to replace it ?

The studs are "T" shaped. There is no part nuber for the studs. Buying the whole grille with studs and back side frame is one part number.

Thanks, I found one on eBay for 2010 and up. Did Toyota make any changes from 09 to 2010 that you know of? It's a matte black piece and just what I need. I just need the Toyota loga that fits inside the piece.

2010 will not fit. 4th gen is 03-09. The studs come with the grille, they're not replaceable. It's actually the grille that would need to be replaced. The studs sit in the grille in a very weak area. It's almost like it was designed to fail. If you try to take the nuts off and it just spins, the grille is junk.

The answer is one of those funny words that only automotive manufacturers seem to use. You know, like "lamp" instead of "light"? Anyway, the piece you're referring to is called "garnish."
