HELP!! How do I remove rear hatch handle panel?

Hook 'Em Horns!

New member
Trying to replace my SR5 rear hatch handle panel (color matching) with a TRDP/TE version (black), and I can't seem to find anything on here as to how I go about this.

Help me t4r.org, you're my only hope..

Thanks in advance!!

Hmm. All I want to do is swap out the SR5 panel (classic silver) for the TRDP/TE one (black). The Toyota parts dude said I would be able to swap out the handle panel and wouldn't need any other pieces except the lettering and emblem. After reviewing those docs, it seems I will need to order the items labeled "non-reusable" before tackling this mod:

NO. 2 Back Door Service Hole Cover
Butyl Tape
Back Door Outside Garnish Seal

Anything else I'm missing?

Thanks again!

I would take a guess and the Back Door service hole cover is simply a piece of plastic, the Butyl tape should be the black adhesive that seals it up. If you carefully use a knife, and cut the bead in half (between the body panel and the plastic )you should be able to reseal it.

The Back Door Outside Garnish Seal, looks to be about $2.90, part #7681935010 at Toyotapartsdirect.com

Thanks bud! Since I have to wait on the part to do the job, I'll order all three just to be thorough.

Thanks d_clark for the quick insight!! I wanted it done this weekend but would rather do it right.

Am I crazy for wanting to do the opposite? Thinking about swapping the black handle panel on my 2016 Trail Premium for a body-colored (Barcelona Red). I want to black out the badges but don't like the black-on-black look.

Anyone have a good source for a red handle panel?

I swapped out the silver panel on my 4runner for a black panel. Definitely takes some work, but if you follow the instructions found in the forums it really isn’t too bad. Very happy with my swap. Good luck!

I followed the instructions here:

5th Gen 4Runner Mods - Step-By-Step Rear Hatch Trim Removal

I used alcohol to clean the trim, then 5 coats of plastidip to black out the trim and the lettering. You could also paint it if that's your thing, but overall it was a simple little project that made a huge and inexpensive difference.

I would absolutely plastidip it if I wanted black. But I've got black, and I want to go back...

I didn't see any mentions on this site of people ordering body-colored handle panels. Just curious if anybody knows where to get them other than directly from Toyota.

Ah I see. Well you can always prime/paint it whatever color you like then!

I want it Barcelona Red. I'm pretty new to this forum.. is there a go-to source for factory color-matched spray paint? If so, I'd be open to trying that. Worst case, I'm out $124 to get a new one if it doesn't come out right.
