Help Installing Speakers

I have a 2001 4Runner SR5. I'm replacing the factory speakers, but can't figure out how to get the door panels off. Does anyone know how or know where a guide is located? I want to do this myself to save some dough, but also am afraid of messing up my door panels.

Did you find a guide anywhere? I'm looking for pics of the door w/o door panels on so i can try to figure out a gameplan on my 2001 sr5 ???
 
Just start on the innter vertical side..closest to hinges.

Just give em a yank...find the screws holding on the panel....usually one under the arm rest..let me know

dont be afraid to go to town, the hooks are replacable
 
Yeah the snaps are replaceable but don't go at it like a re****ed ape or you will ruin the panel. 1. Take out the screw holding your door handle and slide the handle straight forward. Then it will pop out and you can remove the snap holding the latch release rod. The door handle will then slide down off the rod. 2. Next, pry up the front end of the window and lock control switch until it pops up, slide it forward and clear of the door panel so you can disconnect the plug. 3. Pry up on either end of the arm rest. This will pop straight up and out. Then remove the 2 screws securing the panel to the door (This is were pulling like an idiot can ruin the door panel). 4. You have 2 similar snaps with a button in the middle. One is on the end of the door panel nearest the pop up lock and one is underneath the tweeter cover/sail mount cover near the mirror mount. Push the button in until it clicks and then you can pull the snaps out. 5. Now you are clear to start prying. Start at the bottom and work towards one side, then go back to the bottom and work to the other side. In warm weather you should have no problems here. Try to feel out the location of the snaps as best as possible and grip the panel nearest the snap location. 6. Pull the panel up and off the door. Follow this order in reverse to put it back and you should not have to order any replacement parts.

BTW Run, I can pop off my panels faster than I can get a burger at a drive thru so if you need a pic I should be able to take one for you. . . maybe I should make a vid and post it somewhere?

Do you have the factory speakers still installed?

I was just curious as to what the factory speaker bracket looks like in the door. Even a snapshot picture would help, google images has nothing for a 2001 :(
 
No factory speakers anymore but I do have the factory plate still. I used an adapter plate that came with my new speakers and it mounted right up.

Sweet, So you're using 6.5" in the fronts with the factory plate? If so, then cool cause i dont have to buy any extra adapters for that i hope. I still gather that i need the rear door adapters to go from 4" to 5.25" back there eh? That is most helpful for sure, i'm trying to buy all my installation parts online and i want to have everything i need once I start taking things apart. Thanks for posting that :bigok:

Also, what about the tweeter pods.. Will most any 1" tweet fit in there? I notice some are smaller than 1" depending on brands.

Yeah those are my Boston 6.5s you see. The tweets took a little while to figure out a good fit but I ended up using the factory bracket and just shaving down the tweet mounting cup that was included. And yes, I imagine just about any 1" will sit in there nicely. For the rears I used the factory rear plate and just modified it by cutting out a larger opening and sanding down the ribbing so the speaker would sit flush. The rear plate also had a clip mount for the speaker connector that I had to shave off. Nothing too serious and relatively easy. I can get you a pic of that as well if you need a visual.

Ahh, Bostons... I thought they looked familiar! (i currently have some MB Quarts i pulled out of my car, same looking mounting ring) I had forgotten about those tho, been so long since i've bought new car audio stuff. I may see how much a set of those go for in front and rear :p I like a stout speaker that can handle a good bit of mid drive as well.

I might just go ahead and order the back adapter plates, just so i can keep the factory ones on backup. I'm going to get the speaker harnesses too so i don't have to cut anything.

A pic would be good for reference tho :nerd:
 
Can you show some photos of how you put the front and rear speakers in the factory speaker space? So did you really get 6.5 inch speakers in the rear too? Where do you get the brackets from?

I only added the pioneer head unit, all amp wiring, and installed the sub and sub amp. I used the radio harness but i'm still shopping for the door speaker replacements (not sure what i want yet.)
 
I modified my factory plate to fit 5.25s in the rear. You wouldn't fit 6.5s without cutting into the door as the 5.25s just barely squeezed in.
 
I laid a template over it for my cut out diameter and then had to sand down the ribbing and shave off a plastic clip holder for the speaker wire plug. This was just to allow the speaker to sit flush and form a good seal. It was pretty easy and works really well.

i have crutchfields stereo install instructions for a 2003 4runner.. similar though i think!
