HELP! Intermittent Stalling, tried everything.

New member here so I apologize for digging up an old thread. Very helpful to get me started but I have a slightly different issue to add.

Once the stall occurs I have a hard time getting it to restart. Will crank but will not fire. No warning before hand. Will stall sometimes as I am looking it over at idle. Stock vehicle. No codes. Once restarted runs rough but will idle out and seems to run fine.

Back story is I have not started the troubleshooting yet but just doing the research first. I have owned the vehicle for about 8 months with no issues. Purchased it from original owner who let the maintenance slip as he didn't use the truck as often prior to sale.

Thanks

Possible causes:

Plugged fuel filter, fuel pump not producing enough fuel pressure.

If it just dies for no valid reason

Ignition issue
Possible crankshaft sensor issues. [ mostly they go and no start]

With the rough idle and hard start. I start with verifying the fuel system is working properly. Then go from there.

Thanks
Ill look into those areas as well.
With the fact the maintenance was lacking fuel filter would be good to do as well. Seems to only stall once warmed up which lead me to this thread.

Its honestly could be a pile of different things. I figured you needed to start at the beginning.

Stalling under heavy acceleration or load when warm?

It stalled first time just off of deceleration coming to a stop light.
Then it has stalled at idle with hood up with me looking over items.
Once it stalled I could hear relay or some type of clicking noise from the top of the engine near the fire wall.

Mostly stulling in gear sitting at a stop sign. Could be a torque converter going bad. However, mostly that has other symptoms and signs. Plus the FSM has a test to confirm or rule out a torque converter.

May take a little time ruling out what it's not before you figure it out. That to me was always the best reward of fixing it. Plus I always learn things along the way. :)

Hi Folks, those who replaced your evap canister... what part number did you buy? Did you buy any associated hoses? What are those part numbers? Thanks!

Had to comment about people who follow through and report results after installing replacement parts. Thank you very much! Had this problem for a year or so and finally found your post. No CEL, ran beautiful otherwise, pro mechanic could not find the problem, no codes. I was on the verge of replacing the 4runner which my wife has owned for 18 or 19 years and loves dearly. I had replaced almost all the parts you had and still had the problem. What did the trick for me was you reporting hot weather and no codes/CEL. almost a perfect match. My idle would fluctuate before dying. Ordered the same part from Camelback Toyota and the problem was solved. In the 90s here in Florida and the 4runner is running perfect. Thank you very much. also thanks to ajonesnv and Camelback Toyota

Hi Crzytrckr, has your problem remained solved after installing the Evap canister system? I have the exact same problem that only shows itself on the hottest days of the year. I also had a pending P0446 code the last time it stalled which is a Evap Emmision Control System Vent Control Circuit problem, so it seems like it might be related.

Have you replaced the crank position sensor? Not to be mistaken for the cam position sensor. A bad crank sensor will cut the engine out while driving without any warning. Mine was caked full of oil. It was one of the things ive replaced as well which solved my stalling. To this day the stalling has not come back. Be sure to buy Denso. Good luck.

Thanks for starting such a thorough thread cbr900boy. I seem to have the exact same issue that only shows itself on the hottest of days. I also had a pending EVAP related code thrown the last time this issue hit (P0446), so I'm looking hard at the EVAP system. Has your issue remained solved?

Hey guys. Similar issues:

98 4Runner Limited 4x4

No CEL

Fuel delivery seems fine as it runs when it runs and runs strong with no bogging, it does seem to only have issues after it has warmed up (motor running for a bit)

It hasnt been too hot here in San Diego
BUT
I did smell fuel so I was checking fuel lines and my Evap box was squirting fuel out the atmosphere vent hose. Could it just be the evap box going bad? I dont think it has a crack or anything since its not leaking but ive been stumped as to why its been hesitating and stalling (when it does decide to) plus the occasional fuel leak out the evap box which is weird.

This is my first 4runner, I DO have a leak from the intake pipe (after the maf) but it doesnt seem like thats the issue because itll run fine and strong until it doesnt. I do have a new pipe on order from toyota (the first one they gave me was the wrong one but it showed it as the right one? So my buddy told me to order the 96 tacoma intake pipe as that one was similar to mine for sure. (First one had a larger hole for the silencer box) mine has a smaller hole for the silencer.

I just got this thing less than a month ago used of course, and im barely finding the issues out with it now. [emoji30]

Any help is fine, I might end up pulling an evap box off a junk one anyway just to see if it does it.

Otherwise car runs fine, pulls strong etc.

That typically occurs when people overfill the gas tank. Gas pump handle clicks off, but people think "I can fit another gallon or ten in there". That extra gas needs to go somewhere and makes it's way into the charcoal canister and floods it with fuel.

Would that render the canister to have issues? I have done that twice but only because when the truck is at under half a tank it does hesitate/sputter and rpms drop sometimes stalling or not. Im going to drop by the junkyard and pull another canister off today if its still there just to see.

The air inlet hose (post Maf and sparks will be swapped out tomorrow)

Yes. Charcoal canister is meant to handle gas vapors not liquid gas.
