HELP! Lost master key....

Today at the mall I lost my spouse's keys, I looked everywhere and can't find them and nobody has turned them in. I came home and can't find the SPARE master key either.

The only key I can find is a plain metal key (not metal with a black plastic cap like the others) so I'm worried that if we drive all the way out to the mall to get the SUV the key won't start the ignition.

Does anyone know if the SR5 came with the immobilizer key chip or not? I'm freaking out thinking my absent-mindedness has just cost us hundreds of dollars to get new keys or computers or what have you... Please tell me this isn't the case??

The dealership isn't open until tomorrow, but it's a saturday so I'm not sure if anything can be done.

Is it a 2004?

If you've got a 3rd gen, (96-02) I think you;d be fine. Im not sure about 4th gen's.

$15-25 for dealer cut key based on VIN. You might be able to call ahead and give them the VIN so there is not wait. They might even be open on a Sat.


EDIT: I have a 97 and I don't know anything about a computer chip on 2000s but if you don't see a chip then it probably isn't there. These Toyota keys are pretty plain.

My girlfriends 2000 came with 2 keys with the black cap and 1 without and all 3 keys start it. I wasn't sure if it would so I tested it just to make sure. You should be fine.

My '99 SR5 came new with three keys--two masters (one with plastic cap, one flat metal) and one valet key, also flat metal but rounder. No chips and all will start the car. The valet key can't open the glove box.

It's possible you came up with a valet key.

If your plastic master had the wide slot that means no chip. The chipped keys have a much shorter slot, about 3/8". If the metal key has a slightly rounded top, it is a valet key.

I have the same truck as well, 2000 SR5. I only use the silver metal key. Mine locks and unlocks the glove box.

You'll be fine, these things didn't have immobilizers widely used.

Reminds me of a funny story when my father tried to make a copy for his 2007 Sienna. We've never had a car with immobilizer before, so it was quite a surprise.
