HELP ME MY ABS AlMOST KILLED ME.

Thanks for all the feed back this site is killer. The grinding noise only happens when the ABS kicks in. Should a light come on when ABS is working? I think i might pull the fuse tonight to see how she reacts. id rather not wait until i crash into someone to pull the fuse. i can always put it back.

Light will only come on when the ABS is malfunctioning or disabled.

When it does happen mash on the brakes harder. I mean both feet on the pedal to the floor. Go to an empty parking lot and try it.
But the only other way would be to disable the abs system.

I tried this today on a gravel road just now and it works. There's no snow around to test it on though. I didn't need both feet but just push the pedal all the way like you are on a leg press machine!

So on slippery surfaces brake very lightly or VERY hard. Tires make a difference too I expect a lot of the problem would go away with some blizzaks.

I hit the car in front of me at speed of less than 10 mph with about a car's length. I hit the brake too hard and I heard the clicking sound, yet the car did not stop at all. I think the ABS causes my accident. It was in perfect road condition. I have a 97 4runner with 174K miles.

I owned an '07 FJ Cruiser and the ABS system was equally as TERRIBLE. Over small bumps hitting the brakes you would have no control. I hated it.

I've only experienced that a couple of times since owning my '98 4R but it still sucks.

Not sure if I can contribute anything to your original concern with the sound other than you might have an actual mechanical issue with your brakes.

To the later items about stopping at slow speeds. Gearing down helps when decelerating but there comes a breakeven point where you are slow enough that now your braking is fighting the idle rpm's. I find that when the ABS kicks in below this point it works better to just pop it into neutral. It's saved me on many intersection slides, especially since this is where most ice buildup happens. It's almost a habit now.

You sir need to save opperating your vehicle till you have the proper adjustment on your rear brakes.

i thought the crazy grinding noise and pulsing pedal was only me

gald (not glad) to hear that it's just a terrible design...these trucks really are horrible at breaking in the snow/ice

is there any way to upgrade the system? newer components?

doing the TBU some guys have talked about swaping in a larger MC, any help there?

Almost rear ended a cop!

Anyone know why right before i come to a stop my 4runner goes forward a bit i pulled the abs relays and it stopped but i really dont dont like seeing the the dash lights on i almost hit a cop stopped ahead of me because of this it just releases right before you come to a complete stop and goes another foot or so
