I'm not mechanically savvy, but if i've got directions and the right parts I can get in there and do it. As a last ditch to keep my rig ('88 SR5, 3.0 v6 AT) alive, I'm gonna replace my AT filter. I'm scouring the internet and can't find a helpful set of directions, or even a diagram that'll tell me how to go about doing this. Anybody got an idea?

Scour the internet a little more and you will find an 88 Factory Service Manual you can download. It has step-by-step instructions how to fix everything on your truck.

Try ebay. I have been able to find used factory service manuals for all of my vehicles for anywhere from $5.99 to $19 for one for my Harley. Worth every penny.
