Ok so bought an 85 4runner DLX automatic. When I got it had no stereo just the eight wires where the factory plug had been cut off. In another post I was able to identify the wires. The cigarette lighter and the clock which are on the same fuse worked flawlessly.
I found an 85 stereo that came out of an 1985 TOYOTA PICKUP SR5 5spd. I got a male plug and spliced the existing wires into the plug. However the stereo only uses 6 wires and I am left with a constant power and illumination wire. I plug in the stereo and it works flawlessly. I do not have back speakers so I used both the +/- wires for each front speaker, the switched power wire, and ground wire to the stereo. I capped off the other two wires not used.
But now when I go to plug in the lighter ( NOT HEAT LIGHTER UP) just try to plug the lighter back in - it blows the fuse.
Currently, I just kept the cig lighter unplugged and use the stereo but want to fix this issue. Remember cig lighter and clock worked fine before installing stereo. But now clock and stereo work fine. It is just when I plug in Cig lighter it pops fuse...
Any ideas what is gone wrong here? Anyone know why the 85 pickup stereo does not use the illum or constant wire? Or should I use the constant wire to power stereo and not the switched power wire?
Any help or brain storming would be appreciated.
