Help needed! Never Maintenanced until 244k Miles

I believe that the Toyota part number for the rear differential vent/breather is 90930-03031 (or possibly 90930-03136).

It is possible that RockAuto does not carry it, but they may also be able to search their inventory using the oem part number.

It might also be called an axle vent.

Some forum members also do what is called a "breather mod" to move the location of the vent higher up on their 4Runner.

Thanks, Bossman. I will look again. My guess is they do not carry it.

I once called them and asked (and one time emailed with a similar question) whether they carry some part because I could not locate it in their catalog and their reply was (in both cases) along the lines of "We are able to keep our prices low because the customers should be able to find stuff online on their own and if they can't then we probably do not stock the part they are looking for and that they cannot provide this kind of service". I thought it was weird, but whatever: they probably know better how to run their business.
 
Looks like it cross-references at RockAuto to 924262 - a Dorman aftermarket vent.

Although on their site it says it is only for 1986-1996 4Runners - weird!

It is a relatively low cost item, and I'd be tempted to get it from your local Toyota dealer to ensure you get the right one (based on your year/model of 4Runner).

I was looking into the mod, including on this site (though I have not seen that thread, thanks). I am thinking to just plug a new OEM (will settle for what you found for now) for the time being. I mean I made mine work again, but it is all rusted and not really all that good looking. I am planning to change the fluid and wanted to plug something in maybe temporary, but may end up being permanent and just be replaced every year or two or three; in other words as required.

I live out in the boonies and the closest dealership to me is about 130 miles away, otherwise I would just grab one at the dealer. I will grab one there next time I am around. The one you found will do for now (I am sure it will work just fine on a 2008).

Indeed, will be part of the maintenance now for me as well. I checked mine after my cousin's Tacoma leaked the fluid through the seals due to the corroded and plugged valve. Checked mine and it looked like a solid piece of rod. I soaked it in penetrant for about an 30 minutes to an hour and it cleaned it up and it is fully operational again. So yes, I will be replacing it and checking on it every other oil change or so, as should everyone. Not sure if the mod is really worth the time and effort.
 
If you have a sunroof, don’t forget to clean up and lube the tracks. You’d be surprised at how gross it gets in there.

There’s a rubber seal around the glass that keeps the sunroof mostly water tight (any water that does happen to pass empties through the sunroof drains if they’re not clogged). Cleaning the mechanism and the sunroof cavity will help that rubber seal better and prevent moisture from entering the cabin.

Good to make this a semi annual routine.

So all I could find out in the boonies that is decent was Royal Purple MaxGear 75-90. Is it OK to use in both diffs and transfer case? There is also synthetic Valvoline 75-90, but they only have one last bottle in stock. I venture the Purple is a better option?

Last May when I went to source the fluids specified in my owner's manual, but my local Toyota dealership could not provide the Toyota fluids.

At 151,000 km (94,000 miles) I decided to drain and fill the transfer case gear oil, drain and fill the front differential gear oil and rear differential gear oil. Since my local Toyota dealership gets their (75W-90) gear oil in bulk, I was not able to use the recommended Toyota gear oils as specified in the owner's manual. Ended up using Lucas Synthetic 75W-90 gear oil in the transfer case and differentials.

You should be just fine with the Royal Purple MaxGear 75W-90 in both the differentials and transfer case.
