Help needed on 06 4Runner V6 176k with oil residue around the intake manifold

Hi, 4th gen friends.

I need some help to identify what is the issue of my car. I was cleaning my throttle body and noticed there was some oil residue around the intake manifold. I was thinking is it possible the intake manifold gasket? I did some research on our forum, but find nothing related. Have any of you guys seen this before? any thoughts? Car's idle is fine and I think there is no air leaking inside. Thanks in advance!

Wait a while longer for more responses, it's the weekend and most are out doing weekend stuff and not on the forum.

I would think it would be more a valve cover gasket issue instead of the intake gasket because there really no oil to speak of in the intake or running through it, it could possibly also be a leak in the PCV hose, the PCV is for relieving any pressure/piston blowby from the crankcase via the oil galleys in the head, sometimes there will also be some oil vapor mixed in with the combustion gases/blowby and as it gets removed by excess pressure and also by a bit of suction from the intake, it goes via the hose to the intake to be returned to the cylinders to go through the combustion process again, if that hose is cracked it will/can drip oil residue onto the intake.

That gunk is old. No way to really know where it’s coming from because it’s all over the place. For all you know oil was spilled as it was being poured during an oil change and that’s all it is.

Use some degreaser and completely clean off that area. Then check it a few days later. If you have an actual small gasket leak or some other type of leak then it will start showing up right around the source.

Thanks for your reply, this is my first post in our forum, I was thinking maybe no one has seen this post yet... Now I know, thanks!
I checked my valve cover gaskets while I was cleaning the throttle body, looks like it is dry on both side. But since I have owned this car for less than a year, it could be some previous oil residue. As long as it is not some common issue on 4th gen runner, it will be cool. I cleaned the PCV valve as well. ( I think the PCV hose only route on the drive side from the PCV valve to a black nozzle on the valve cover, am I right?)
I wonder, is it practical to add oil catch can on our runner? Any write up according to your knowledge. Thanks in advance!

I just noticed the same thing on my ‘07. Did you find the cause of the oil build up?

Most likely valve cover gaskets. They're inexpensive and easy to replace. Buy from McGeorge Toyota.

Valve cover gasket are dry. Its coming from the valley somewhere

Here is what I found today when I removed the plastic intake plenum. Lots of oil outside of the gasket area. I assume this has been leaking and building up on the lower intake. Time will tell.
