Help needed

Maybe you knowledgeable folks can help me out w/ my predicament. I recently had an engine swap along w/ replacing my ujoints. The problem is when I drive w/ my whole family in the vehicle, after driving for awhile, there is this noise coming from the right middle and rear underside of the vehicle and makes the vehicle vibrate pretty bad. The shaking/vibrating and clanking noises that's coming from the underside of the vehicle seems to only happen when the vehicle is full of passengers. When I drive solo, everything is fine.

I've taken it to my mechanic and he's checked the underside of my vehicle and according to him, everything seems good. All the bolts are tight and nothing seems loose.

When loaded, is it possible the drive shaft is contacting something? Exhaust?

You don't say what you're driving but if it's a 4WD, mark and remove your rear driveshaft and see if the problem goes away.

If that’s the case what could cause the drive shaft to have contact with the exhaust? My mechanic checked and according to him everything looked secure. And it’s a 2wd vehicle btw.

You don't say what you're driving but if it's a 4WD, mark and remove your rear driveshaft and see if the problem goes away.

Get your family in the vehicle or just load the rear cargo compartment with a bunch of weight. Now get underneath your rig and see if you can figure out the source of the noise. Possibly the driveshaft rubbing on the gas tank skid. Loose exhaust hitting the driveshaft.

Was this a problem before the work? Maybe it's just a case that the driveshaft wasn't properly balanced. When the vehicle's suspension is loaded down, it changes the angle of the driveshaft. Maybe for some weird reason, the unbalanced driveshaft is more accentuated when the suspension is loaded down. Take a look at the zerk fittings along the whole driveshaft. The zerk fittings on the double cardan joint near the transmission should be facing the same direction as the zerk fitting on the rear slip yoke and rear u-joint. Toyota balanced the driveshafts in this fashion with all the zerk fittings facing the same direction. Maybe when they did the driveshaft work, they didn't get the proper alignment of the slip yoke with the main propeller shaft (driveshaft).

Please see MTBTIM's post, but let's keep your mechanic out of it, he didn't solve it, so his point of reference is moot. When the vehicle is loaded and the suspension sags the driveshaft moves closer to the body and anything attached to the body, which could cause your noise/vibration.
