Help Needed

Just picked up a wrecked 88 4Runner. Gonna use the drivetrain in a Suzuki Samurai if I can get it running. My question is this - there appears to be a component missing from the engine compartment - just behind the driver's headlight. (See pic) What is supposed to go here?

You appear to be missing your AFM (Air Flow Meter).

Yeah - I just found it in the FSM... Is that the same as a Mass Air Flow Sensor? That's all that comes up on Autozone.com when I search for "Air Flow"

Is it absolutely needed to run the engine? Think I read somewhere that the fuel pump will not run unless something senses air flow - but can't find it anywhere again. Would not having the Air Flow Meter stop the fuel pump from running? If so, is there a work-around for testing only?

I have spark but no fuel right now. I'd really love to get this thing running before I pull it out to adapt to the Samurai...

Yes, that would be the same part. I may not be 100% correct but it should not run without it feeding its information back to the ECU. There is a green plug near your igniter (can barely see it in the picture) that you can jumper that forces your fuel pump to run regardless of the AFM signal. You could give it a shot and see if it will fire up.

Thanks, I was just coming back look for the fuel pump jumper again... Will let you know how it works out...

ETA - Didn't seem to work... I jumpered a green plug by the ignitor that had 2 wires going to it. Did not hear the pump run nor did I get fuel in the cylinders (plugs out) Think tomorrow I'll drop the tank and removed the pump to see if it's stuck...
