hi guys...
will i just picked up a 2000 limited 4x4 4runner with 156k miles and was in the process of doing a tune up for her..but sadly after i changed the spark plugs she wont idle at all... i checked all the vac. lines, all the packs are tight and all the wires are pushed in all the way...everything is on as it should of been when it was running....so after i changed the plugs and hooked up everything i go in to start the her up but she just turns over and acts like is going to idle but just dies...i was using carb cleaner on the tb but i have turned her over like 20 times now and still wont idle..can anyone please help..:sadwave:

p.s. i thought it might of been the IAC so i went ahead and clean that too but still have wont idle..

yeah i retraced my steps like 10 times already and they were torqued and everything...do u think a ground can cause all this? im asking cuz i took off the screw where the diagnostic ground was at but i put it back in but maybe its not grounding right???

Do you have any kind of remote starter in your vehicle?

I had the same problem after I changed the plugs in my 4Runner. It would turn over, start, then die. My problem was that the previous owner had installed a remote starter at one point. When he tapped into the red ignition wire (at least, I think that's what it's called). He crimped the ends together and didn't do a real good job of it. When I took out the section between the throttle body and the air filter, I had to remove the wiring harness from there, too. When I moved it, the crimped section on the red wire came disconnected and prevented the 4Runner from idling. Since I didn't do anything with that section, I didn't think to check it when I was trying to diagnose things. Drove me crazy until I finally noticed the broken red wire. I reconnected them and taped it as a temporary fix (it's since been re-soldered). Because I'd tried starting it so many times, I had flooded the engine. It was late and I went to bed. By the time the next morning rolled around, it fired right up.

Someone else had a similar problem and mentioned that the fuse for his remote starter had blown, and that was the cause of it.

Just two suggestions for you to check out. Good luck.

are the wires in the right spot ?

yeah all the wires are in the right spots i checked like 10 times and its driving me crazy..

@4-ripcord is that the fuse that located under the hood or do i have to go under the driver steering wheel...

@donkeyhoatie where is that fuse at?? and i dont have a aftermarket alarm just the factory one so idk if theres going to be any wire around that area...but ill go and check again...

Are you sure they are wired correctly? did you check the diagrams and everything, each cylinder needs a specific wire, not just any wire...

Yeah I'm sure..I didnt get new wires so they went back in as they came out...

Ok so I just hooked up a obd2 reader to her and now she is throwing a p1300 code for misfire...so do y'all think it might be a bad plug??

Ignition/igniter malfunction, so like Ripcord said, if you haven't reset the EFI fuse, do so as this may clear the code. If not, it's always a good idea to replace the plugs and wires(Can't recall if you did that as well or just the plugs).

Ok so I just check the fuse and behold its bad..so I replaced it and now runs good as new..thanks all for helping a noob in the 4runner world..

Good news man!!! glad you were able to get back on the road fairly quickly. This is why I love this forum, it's full of info. and great people. :thumb3:

Same issue..

I’m having a similar issue on my 96 v6 Limited...

I replaced all of the plugs and now it won’t start.. I don’t even think I’m getting spark..

Did you already try all the suggestions listed before? The most common issue is something is unplugged, such as the MAF or ignition coils.

#1) Recheck the wire routing.

#2) Make sure you made all your electrical connections at the coil packs - the electrical connection is fully snapped into the socket.

#3) Make sure the wires are properly connected to the coil packs - fully snapped in also.

#4) Make sure you have the spark plugs wire boots pushed in fully making a connection with the spark plugs on the driver side.

#5) Like somebody already mentioned, make sure you reconnected your Mass Air Flow electrical connection on the air tube.

If you do all that, your vehicle should start. There's been LOTS of people that have screwed up the spark plug wiring so don't assume that there's no way you made that mistake. Recheck your work and you'll find the solution.
