HELP! Oil Problem!

Hey guys i'm new to the forum. I have a 96 4runner limited 3.4L V6 with 180k miles. I recently just had the check engine light come on. Funny enough though it was right after I got my oil changed.

I noticed they put 10w30 oil instead of 5w30 like it says on the cap. I wanted to know if this would have any effect on the car at all?

What kind of oil do you guys put in your runners?

If you are in a cold area the 10w-30 is a no go in the winter. 10w-30 should not be used ever below 0 F in this engine. You can try that in the summer if its hot outside.

Take it back down and tell them to do another change with a new filter and 5w-30. They should have used the right weight. Tell them the check engine light came on after their oil change with the wrong weight.

Different weight oil puts different pressure on seals and changes the resistance on the oil pump.

I dont know if that corresponds with anything to do with your check engine light but if you live in a cold area, change to 5w30 right away. Preferably Full Syn w/ a Purolator pureONE filter.

Thanks for the input. I live in Northern Virginia about 10 min south of DC. It gets pretty cold here but not too cold. I think the coldest its been was lie 20 degrees.

But I am going to go back to them and tell them to put the right kind in my car. I just hope that is the problem for my check engine light coming on.



Nice runner by the way. how did you install your headunit? i've been to bestbuy and they told me I couldn't get an aftermarket headunit because of the way mine was shaped.

Lol. A headunit will fit into 3rd Gen 4runners. Best Buy can be a joke sometimes. DON'T go there to get it installed. I did mine myself and it was pretty easy.

Do you have oil pressure on the gauge? If the light stays on all the time they may have knocked off the wire to the oil pressure sending unit. Go back to them and have them find out as I doubt that the wrong weight oil would cause the light to be on.

That would make the most sense for your check engine light. Try undoing the negative battery hookup for about 5 minutes. This will reset the computer and check engine light. See if it is still on when you start your car again. You could have someone read the code and look it up for you if it is still on or comes back on.

As for the headunit, you can put single or double din units in the 3rd gens. Like Clemsonfan said, dont go to best buy to have it installed (or similair place) and the mounting kits are pretty easy to find that replace the stock unit.

Take it to a place that only does really nice car audio if your not doing it yourself. They do good jobs because that is all they do. At least that is my experience.

Oil viscosity will definetely NOT cause a check engine light to come on. Have someone who has a SnapOn MT2500 scanner run a diagnostic on it. Beware of the over the counter scanners, especially from AutoZone. These will definetely lead you in the wrong direction.

Which Best Buy did you go to? I'm from the area also.
