help on exhaust terminology...

I'm having some difficulty onthe terminology used when talking about exhaust systems, I have a 03 v8 with a monster exhaust leak (headers) so i'm going to order either the magnaflow headers or the other ones... cant remember the name. anyway i figured might as well do the whole exhaust.

so i know the cats are built onto the headers. then they connect to a y pipe, then back to an expansion chamber? then to the muffler, then another expansion chamber, then out the back end of the pipe.

If I buy say a borla or magnaflow cat-back exhaust, is it actually from the cats back, or from the y pipe back, or from after the first expansion chamber back?

Ive read a custom y pipe is a good thing on our runners so I wanted to do that but maybe not worth it if thats all built into the new cat-back, anyone have a comment or picture of how far forward the cat-back actually go?

I think the "expansion chambers" you are thinking about are resonators?

Normally a "cat" back system is just that...from the back of the last catalytic converter and out the rear end. Hopefully that helps

Pacesetter & their called exhaust manifolds because they have the cat built in . So as you know a header does not have the cat built in , careful if you order headers lots of custom work to mount up ! Lots of the guys here are satisfied with the pacesetter manifolds .

When all else fails, you can always refer to components as dealybobbers or thingamajigs, while gesturing vaguely.
