Help Pick New Wheels: Gold / Black / Graphite 17x9 Wheels -12offset or -38offset

As the title says, I am in process of finalizing some changes to the 4runner.

I will be changing from my current setup of 17x8.5 0 offset w/ 26570r17 --> 17x9 w/ 28570r17

1) Trying to decide between two offsets the wheels 17x9 come in:

• -12 offset
• -38 offset

2) Trying to decide on which color combo would look the best on my white 4runner:

• Gold
• Graphite
• Gold

Suspension: Currently running Bilsteins w/ Dobinson springs, JBA upper control arms. Fender liner moved forward, mud flaps removed.

Tires: I will be going with either Wildpeaks or Duratracs

Already ordered a body mount relocation kit and will be getting that welded on by the shop. Decided on that instead of body mount chop in case I want to go bigger tires in the distant future.

I found a overlanding shop that will be doing the install and any required trimming. I am trying to not trim and cut up the 4runner too much while still achieving the tires poking out a little bit past the fenders.

I saw a lifted white 5th gen on gold wheels a few months ago and it looked awesome. Had I seen that before I would have went gold on mine over black.

Loving the stance with the -12 offset.

Mods to make it fit:
- Body Mount Relocation Kit - DRT Fabrication (could have gotten away with just doing a body mount chop, but decided to do relocation in case I want to go up to a bigger size tire in the future).

- Muds flaps were already removed w/ old setup.

- Front liner trimmed and very tiny cut to the front bumper at the bottom.

Haven't had much chance to drive it since getting the mods done so will post more photos soon.

Looks great! What is the suspension lift (in inches) on your 4R? I’ve gotten away without having to do a BMC/relocate so far - 3”/2”, and 1” body lift, all Bilstein 5100/Toytec(Eibach) and 33” tires (255/80r17) on OEM 17x7.5 rims with 1.25” wheel spacers. I have BMC plates, but I haven’t installed them yet. I think the skinny tires help with the BMC issue.

I am running Bilstein w/ Dobinson Springs (I think its about 3 inches up front & 2 in the back). Levels out the 4runner.

Skinny tires definitely help with the rubbing issue. I initially was thinking of doing BMC, but decided to do a relocation after speaking with the shop owner who works primarily on 4runners and GXs. Since I have absolutely zero plans to ever sell my 4runner (have had it for about 12 years now), i figure i just do the relocation in case I want to go to 35s in the future.

9" wide wheels with -12 offset, with 285's is exactly flush with the fender and the tread edge. The tread is still "tucked" inside the top of the fender, but the sidewall bulges beyond the fender line.

Yeah, and it'll still fling rocks though.

-38 is gonna give you an inch of tread poking out of the fender, I don't think it'll be either practical or a good look for the 4Runner.

I'm unsure if I'd categorize -12 as "practical", but it looks darn good.

My suggestion is the gold, it'll look amazing. The black will look like every other black wheel in passing.

Nice! Exactly which wheels did you end up with? It doesn't look like any of your initial choices from those angles.

I too have been going down the wheel rabbit hole myself and am torn on how much offset I really want. Or better put, how much offset I'm willing to clear for. Ive had my Lvl 8 Guardians w/ 33s since 2011 and really just want a change.

Like you, I dont like the idea of chopping off a ton of hard body plastic on the backside of the front wells. Im also hesitant to do the full BM relocate due to (little or not) the intent of that mount and its angled position (wife drives it some too and "what if?"). I plan to do a minimal BM as needed for 33s on more offset but time will tell what I end up with.

As for stance, I'm thinking all (-25mm or -38mm) or nothing (keep my current 17x8.5 -6mm). I figure it had better be a big enough change in looks to warrant the $1k+ price since I could paint my current wheels whatever color anyway.

I've looked at the Summit Dakar (17x9 -25mm), Ray10 or Blaze10 (17x9 -38mm), Black Rhino Guides and Falcon T8 (same -38mm) or lots of other 17x9s that are around -12mm to -15mm. So any options. The search continues...

The other thing to consider is that I also increased the wheel width from my 8.5" to 9". That 0.5" difference plus the -12 offset equaled to a almost flush look with a tiny bit of poke. Depending on which wheel size you go with, you can play around with the offsets.

Another think to consider is which tires to go with. We had my set of 4 BFGoodrich 285/70/17 stacked next to a set of 4 Wildpeaks of the same size. The Wildpeaks were slightly wider even thought they are actually the same size tire.

All in all I am very happy with the look. I wish I had done it earlier.

My bad...I can see that now when looking back over them. I like the ring. It has that beefy, rock crawling look.

And you're right, the extra .25" width adds to the profile and squares up the tire wall too. Another reason I wanted a 9" wheel either way.

As for the -38mm trimming, I may be somewhat in denial as to what exactly will clear but I'm hoping my new LCAs (Superpro Offset) will allow me to get max caster and mainly trim the front. My cam bolts are seized now so my Caster is stuck fairly low as-is, causing a lot of rub with even my -6mm wheels on the BM and fender panel.

I've been running the Wildpeaks since 2016 and they do seem to run larger than others. They're now dry rotting now so I'll be getting a new set of tires soon. I'll have to take that into consideration as well for trimming.
