Hey guys, been looking on here for help and have foudn nemorus topics related to my problem but ive had no luck so ill punt and see if anyone can help me out.

I have a 92 4runner 22RE, bought it about a month ago im the 2nd owner and its in great shape, it started right up ran like a dream...until... drove to the store and it just died, it wont turn over, no crank no power to any accessories gauges etc, but i do have headlights and dome lights surprisingly. It turns over and starts if I take a wire and go directly into the fuse box to the big black wire that tells the car to crank the starter, and it will run and drive but i still have no dash power, gauges lights etc. Here is what ive done and checked so far.

Battery= GOOD only 1/2 year old
New Ground Cable
New main power cable from the battery to the fuse box
New starter relay
New key switch
All fuses are good and not blown

Anything you guys can think to check or have an idea at is appreciated.

Your looking at a total fuse block failure. Somewhere in your harness or fuse blocks you have a short or fault. The only thing you can do is start tracing wires to find the issue. Sense your ecu side is functioning I would recommend the fuse panel under the steering side as your start location.

Also I would like to note if the tilt steering was used a lot it can ware out the wires running along it and short the system and sense you dash is connected to that harness it is possible it pinched off or ground faulted to the steering column.

fuel pump...

fuel filter

check fuel injection wires..

how do any of the above affect whether the rest of the systems in the vehicle have power? none of them play any role in the operation of the starter functioning. i can cut every injector wire with a wire cutter, but the starting circuit will still function correctly, and turn the engine over. it won't start, but it will turn over. same goes for the fuel pump. i can remove it from the tank, but the starter will still function. the fuel filter? no.

i don't generally advise people trying to diagnose problems to throw darts at it in hopes of solving it. it rarely works, and is usually far more expensive than taking the time to go through a logical process of testing and elimination. you are suggesting to the OP to throw darts at it.

the starter relay clearly plays a role in the starting circuit. however, explain to the OP (and to me) how the starter relay will cause all of the other electrical issues described in the first post. no power/lights to the gauges? how does the starter relay do that?

Like Wally says,
"fuel pump... fuel filter...check fuel injection wires.." Will not prevent truck from cranking...
and "Starter Relay" will not prevent power from going to accessories.

Like Bad_Vision says, something in the fuse block or connections to it.

Schematic, Schematic, Schematic. Anyone with schematic for this truck? Short of that, we're throwing darts.
And pics, because from where many of us are we do not see what you have in front of you.

O.P.,
Exactly where in the fuse block did you tap the "wire that tells starter to crank"? This will tell us:
(1) Where there IS power and
(2) where there WAS power but is now gone. This we need to fix.

BTW, the forum does not have a feature to tell others each member's technical know-how so please do not be too sensitive and do not feel offended if people offered you information that they did not know you already have.

Cheers!

I think I still have an old toyota manual for my 86 which had the 22re if you need me to look up something. I did have this problem once and found the main fuse link melted completely. Ran a wire(fuselink) from the battery to the fuse box.....BAM worked. Took me a week to find it.

the black and white wire there on the lef ti moved away from the others in the bunch. I did replace the starter relay, managed to snag one for 5$. but that wasnt it. also i now have to wait for my battery to charge up due to the fact i left the key on in my frustration with this problem. if you guys need a different view let me know.

Have you used a Digital multi meter to check for voltage? Reading your description again, If it was driving , something maybe loose and probably a ground. A rusted nut or wire. You need the most draw at startup but once started it would run.

Have you tried checking your grounds?
