I have a 2001 4Runner SR5. I bought a new keyless remote from the dealer, FCC ID ELVATDD. That is a different FCC ID than my original remote. Can I use it with my car? If so, does anyone have instructions on how to program it? I found instructions for programming the original remote and those don't work with this new one. Thanks!

NO - the FCC # is the spectrum frequency that it transmits on (its a low powered radio transmitter) Take it back and get you $ back. You can find the right one on ebay for $10-25. You can use ones that have less buttons too (like if if don"t want to lower rear window with remote). Post your FCC here someone may have extra.

I too have a 2001 SR5 for a couple of weeks now, and i can't get the transmitter to program and actually work.

Ive tried various programming instructions but cannot get anything to work/respond. When i do the 5 "cycles" and wait for confirmations i get nothing. Also, when i drive the headlights are ALWAYS on and sometimes the locks automatically lock when start up happens but as far as remote transmitter, i get nothing to work.
Its annoying when you have to jump thru programming hoops and i'm not even sure things are even hooked up or working properly in the vehicle locking system to begin with, since this is a second hand vehicle.
I plan to get an alarm installed at some point, should i just go with an aftermarket keyless entry and forget even trying with the factory remote? I like staying factory when i can, but this is pretty much useless as it is.

Have you checked (or changed the battery) - 2001 would be 8 years old if never changed. Are they headlight or DRL (day time running lamps) on? Headlights lights aren't connected to remote entry. Dealer can program remotes using their computer interface. The steps are indeed a pain and they have to be done quickly too.

Not sure about the battery, on the outside it looks newish but it's a generic and cheap looking. (i just bought the 4R 3 weeks ago) I planned to replace it once i get started on putting my stereo in.

I've read some outrageous accounts of dealerships wanting to charge $80 to program a remote, thats just not something i can rely on. I plan to do some audio work and can't be shelling out big dough just to get a remote programmed every time i unhook the battery. I just don't know what to make of it right now, it just doesn't seem to respond to any programming attempts i throw at it.
