I have a noise coming from the rear end that sounds like a wheel bearing or possibly the differential. It is a buzzing/whirring noise that becomes noticeable starting at about 40mph. Accelerating or decelerating doesn't help. I want to lift the rear end off the ground, put the car in gear, rev the engine up and listen to each component with a stethoscope device.
Do I need to keep one of the rear wheels from turning in order for the drive shaft to turn the differential and the other wheel?
What is the recommended way to spin the differential and both wheels at a 40/50 mph speed, while off the ground, so I can listen to each component with a scope in order to identify exactly where the noise is originating from.
