Having a problem with my rear end. Not sure what to make of it but I hope the video can have some people chiming in on their thoughts. Quick backstory to my truck and what has happened thus far:
- I've had my diff done by ECGS a number of years ago when I did my 4.56 gears; ARB Locker in the front; Detroit True Trac in the rear.
- Sudden issue arises where I'm getting a popping sound from my rear end that is cyclical for every tire rotation.
- I look at it myself and after doing numerous trials and errors of chasing down the noise and the feeling the pops in the rear end. I can't think of what it could be as this truck has been a pavement queen for a while now and nothing to warrant a bad rear.
- I have a friend who has a shop take a look at it and after a quick diagnosis, he deduces that it's a bad diff (or LSD). He takes it out and I ship it back to ECGS.
- ECGS looks it over and tells me that they found some damage to the internal gears of the True Trac and replace it and rebuild the diff. I get it back to my friend who reinstalls it. I pick up the truck after hours and all seemed well on my 20-mile ride home. During this time I am on the highway and it's not until I get close to home in stop and go town traffic that I notice that the same noise is back.
- I put the rear of the truck back on jack-stands as I did before and basically have the same issue again. I call ECGS up and explain everything and give them a YouTube link (as posted here) to a video I took. They've been decent help on the phone with trying to walk me through and eliminate possibilities but are pretty insistent that this is now not a rear-end issue.
With the wheels mounted the issue is present (pretty much the LHS as in the posted video). With the wheel(s) removed the binding when turning by hand goes away, when in drive/reverse there is no loud popping banging noise. I've done several processes of elimination to narrow this down to just shy of pulling the axles out (not parking brake, brake caliper, rotor, dust shield, etc). There is no play that I can see in any direction. Also watching the wheel turn (either watching from the back of the truck or front) I cannot see any wobble either. It's almost as if the weight of the wheel on the hub accentuates this issue. Without the weight of the wheel mounted, it almost seems normal.
My question would be what do you all think this is? I mentioned the bearing going out to ECGS and they said they weren't 100% sure but it's possible. They just haven't heard or seen one go in this way if it is.
