HELP Rear lower shock bolt snapped off!!

Where do I begin!! ?
it's really in there, so welding a stud to it won't work.
ANYONE have experience with this exact problem?

Where and what type of bolt do I look as a replacement?

If there's enough meat left when you remove the shock, you may be able to twist it out with a channel locks. Otherwise an easy-out would probably be your best bet.

Start with some penetrating oil and a reverse drill bit. Sometimes just drilling, in reverse, will back them out. Second, the easy-out.

Except the bolt is threaded into an open (internally threaded) stud that is welded to the axle.

MAYBE if you pull the shock off, there MIGHT be enough of the bolt sticking out to clamp on some vice-grips. Some hear and penetrating oil, and it might come out.

If you do have a welder, can you slide a nut over the exposed shaft and weld it on.
Then you could get a some decent leverage...

plus heat

He has broken it off inside of the stud. The only way will be a left handed drill bit or easy out.

I had the same thing happen on a friend's 4runner that we were installing his lift. Once we pried the shock off the lower mount, there was about 1/4" of the bolt hanging out of the mount (just the head broke off) and we were able to get a channel locks on it and turn it out. Without the head, the bolt was almost loose enough in there to turn by hand.

UPDATE : the bolt is out

I really got freakin lucky last night. As I was reverse drilling the bolt moved just a bit, enough for me to realize it was loose. Using a small flat head I coaxed it out. I ran to our local hardware store and they had these JH 8.8 bolt which I believe are Grade 5 or 8?
Thanks guys, I'm glad I went with the reverse thread because if I would have started drilling it out, the bolt would have tightened up.

good to hear you got it outta there. Same thing happened to me after an encounter w/ barbed wire around the axle... on a trail at that. Thought I was screwed also until I finally found out I was able to turn it with the tip of my finger after hitting it with some PB. :cheers: And I went to toyota for a new bolt after

I know this thread is nearly 10 years old but it’s one of the only posts I was able to find that was discussing the bolt snapping off within the housing when I encountered the same issue over the weekend.







As others have stated, there’s a chance you can unthread them screw using a screwdriver and hammer or something similar.

I was able to use a small punch and hammer to tap an edge of the bolt where the head sheered from bolt. Once I saw the bolt rotated about an 1/5 of a turn, I continued to tap it with a hammer until a few threads were sticking out. After that I just unthreaded it by hand…

It was kind of amazing how easy she slipped out.


Morale of the story - Always check the manual for proper Torque Specs.

This just happened to me last week as well, same moral New bolts will be here tomorrow and I'll be more careful this time.

I had the numbers backwards from the FSM (65 N-m = 47 ft-lbs), tried to torque it to 65 ft-lbs and it snapped. I wouldn't have thought 18 ft-lbs over the spec would be enough to break the bolt, but there you go.
