HELP rear Lower shock mount busted last night...

Well me and my buddys were taking an evening shmob up a hill at night and ended up hearing an aweful noise along with what felt like the car all of a sudden hit a pile of wet cement. (althought that probably wouldnt stop it usually :fro Upon inspection... barbed wire got wrapped around the right rear area of the axle about 4-5 times pinching my e-brake cable severly.

After much *****ing about not having all my tools, we finally broke it loose. We continue for a few more feet up the hill which we were halfway up just to hear another noise. I sheared the lower mounting stud for the shock right off along with one washer and bushing about in inch in from the end, the bilstein now extended into my tire. I believe the strength of the barb wrapped around everything was too much for the shock and popped it off...

I was able to stuff one bushing and washer on the inside, push the shock up and onto the stud and strap a tie down from the front side of shock hoop to the rear hitch and attempt to secure that shock like a TSA checkpoint. It worked enough to get me back down a nice hill and safely home.

So I believe I just need a new bolt and some bushings? Anyone else ever have this happen??

Luckily its only $7 worth of parts from Toyota but I'm still curious, has anybody ever lost the bottom end of a shock mount one way or another?

i did on a buddies FZJ80... well sorta the bolt snapped off inside the stud... then he took it to 4wp and well yeah he ended up getting a new rear axle from toyota by the time all was said and done. if only he hadnt been so impatient

yea geez thats scary to read man! haha i soaked it in wd40 and ended up being able to finger it right out, no easyout needed! the broken bolt was stretched out fairly good but the new one went right in, i lucked out but it was pretty unlucky to have that pop the bolt head right off... happy holidays :banana:

any idea who put the shocks on? Were they torqued or hammered on with an impact? Was it a factory bolt, or possibly previously replaced with a generic counterpart?

Just trying to decide if this was a weaker or damaged part, or if this is a potential issue for more people after higher mileage and some abuse.

Bolt snapped, not shock mount BTW sorry for mis-title

H"mm good question, one of my techs at Sears Auto, where i help manage, put them on for me, I watched the whole time. He torqued the bottoms with a socket wrench until he felt they were tight (top bolts were impacted on and off w/ ease).

I believe the reason it snapped was that barbed wire was brought in front of the axle by the tire which wrapped around tighter catching the bolt head and pulling it straght sideways. It was a spot iv mashed several times previously with no wire in the way. this was a case of being careless and not double checking first...

We also reused the original bolt from Toyota but used new washers and bushings which came w/ the Bilstein HDs. The new shock bolt is a 91619‑G1222 if anyone needed to know, I also had to buy one washer from Toyota, I was able to find both bushings the next morning.
