help... skid plate mounting holes stripped

Hey guys, dont know if anyone else has had this problem but after installing my tranny cooler, i was trying to reinstall my skid plate and all the threaded inserts are stripped! the three front ones and even the two back ones. nothing is holding anymore. has anyone here had this same problem? I dont like the idea of driving around without a skid plate, so i want to do something. Help please....

Tap the stripped threads for larger bolts.

I was just faced with this yesterday and drill it out with an 11/32 bit and tapped with a 10mmx1.25 tap and it worked great. That won't work if the nut that is welded on there is gone though.

Yeah, you'll need to tap that ass. The self-tapping bolts that came stock are terrible over time, especially with ham-handed jiffy lubers cross-threading them with impact wrenches. I had to retap my skid plate holes when I got my truck, replaced the stock bolts with conventional bolts and it's been like butta ever since. Fortunately, my holes still were tight enough that I was able to retap for the same size, but if yours are completely stripped, you may have to do as has been said above and drill em all out and retap.

Just drill it out use a longer bolt and put a lock nut on top for the the front crossmember bolts. THere's plenty of room to get your hand and a wrench on top. I had 1 hole that completely stripped out and that what I did.

For the others, you will need to get a 10x1.25 tap. Odds are the threads can be cleaned up with a tap no problem. Try that before you even bother drilling it out.

Yeah pretty common isssue. Retap them or better yet helicoil them. Just keep in mind that there is not much ther to tap just a nut wielded in place.

I think the threads are only M8 from the factory, aren't they? He may not have very good luck trying to tap without enlarging the hole first with the proper size tap drill. I ended up drilling mine out and then tapping them M10.

OP - I wouldn't bother with a helicoil as you will have to enlarge the hole anyway to install one. At that point you might as well install larger fasteners.

You are totally right, it is an M8 x 1.25 - I just had to buy an M10x1.25 for my motorcycle so that was fresh on my brain.

Yeah he would not get very far at all trying to go up 2mm in thread size without first drilling the hole.
